Wipers

So it starts raining and I turn on my wipers. Whack, whack... the wipers are now smacking the windshield gasket. It quit raining. A week later it's a light drizzle so I punch the "pulse" button. Worked as expected. Tried the on button and again, working fine. Turned off the wipers and back on. Whack, whack! So is the fix for this a new motor or is there some kind of limit adjustment or what? Thanks.

My passenger wiper hits the gasket near the side view mirror. FOT had fixed it during one of my pilgrimages to Nacogdoches.  I "think" they rotated the wiper arm on spline. It started hitting again. Since then I've replaced the motor and the wiper's linkage under the dash.

The wipers are 22 inches long. I've contemplated replacing the passenger side with a 21 inch blade so it won't hit the gasket.

Not much activity on this one. Thanks, Ed. I think for the time being I will try smaller blades as you suggest. The couple of threads I've found on motor replacement seem to indicate problems with setting the limit. Still hoping for some more action on this question.

Many years ago, there was an NHTSA recall on the FT wiper system for this over-travel situation.  Doubtful it will help now (not sure of the statute of limitations), but you might want to search the forum to see if folks have dealt with it on their own.

I've about exhausted the search approach. I haven't come across any that discuss my problem which is intermittent. Sometimes they work properly and other times, both blades smack the mirrors. Could it be that IPX Smart Wheel box that's located in the center console?

The box would only control the power and the speed. The geometry of the wipers is mechanical. There must be a mechanical reason for your problem. Do you get any play at the wiper arms manually moving them at the arm?

No play. This problem just started a couple of weeks ago. I turned on the wipes and they both moved too far to the outside but normally to the inside. They park where they always have, right next to the center post. Same issue with any wiper selection on the SmartWheel.

I have the same problem with the right hand wiper it goes to far to the right and slams into the windshield center post. I had it
apart to weld the shaft that the wiper is attach to to the drive arm. Put it all back in and it worked great for about 5 miles and
then traveled too far.

Til you can get it fixed, I would recommend putting some Rainx on your windshield.  With Rainx on my windshield, I rarely have to use my wipers when I am doing 45+ mph.

I bought some rainx before this trip but it was too cold to apply it before I left home and it has just got colder. So far I haven't needed
any wipers.
