Haldex Air Dryer Questions

Tracking air leaks and found clay lining in fittings and hoses. Not finding any loose dust but everything shows signs of filter failure at some point. I found leaks on several fittings, wet tank and front tank drain valves, front tank regulator, rear air tank check valve and wet tank relief valve. Replaced bad fittings, both front tank regulators and check/safety valves and waiting for wet tank relief valve. Replaced D2, air gauges  show 125 lbs were only 100 before replaced.
Looking for advice or suggestions on Air dryer. I think filter has been fairly recent replacement. Systems do not show signs of loose desiccant when draining tanks but obviously has contamination. I'm thinking on putting rebuilt complete dryer on coach. I don't really have time left to try to clean system. Have seen posts where wet tank removal and clean out is suggested. Think I found and corrected major leaks. Will I damage new dryer if I put on with out cleaning tanks? How do you get rid of clay in systems? Do you need to? How do I proceed? WHAT THE HELL WAS I THINKING? LOL. As much fun as chewing on tinfoil

1.  Will I damage new dryer if I put on with out cleaning tanks?

2.  How do you get rid of clay in systems?

3.  Do you need to?

4.  How do I proceed?

5.  WHAT THE HELL WAS I THINKING?
1.  No.  All the trash in the air system from previous filter failure is downstream of the dryer.  It will have no adverse effect on the new dryer.  A fresh factory rebuilt dryer is highly recommended.

2.  As you have determined, there are many possible ways to do this.  Some are pretty laborious, like removing tanks and air lines and cleaning them out with chemical solvents.  Or even buying brand new air tanks and replacing air lines.

3.  It's up to you.  You have already invested the time and expense of replacing many components.  You can continue with that procedure - gradually replacing or cleaning individual items as they give you trouble.

4.  I'd say keep doing what you are doing.  It is possible much of the white powder in the system will mix with moisture into a paste that accumulates in the tank bottoms and remains where it won't cause problems.

Note that I said it's POSSIBLE...only time will tell.

5.  For that answer you should consult with your shrink, or your priest, or your life partner, or your bartender...

Thanks again. I'm trying to reach a stop point and just keep getting further involved. Have just pulled all fuel lines changed all filters, pulled and serviced genset, re insulated quiet box and compartment, replaced both dash fans, replaced dash gauges bulbs with led, worked on Air systems, drain flushed, replaced all hoses and thermostat on cooling system, cut off remote terminal posts because so corroded couldn't wrench and cleaned all cables ends from battery to starter.. Really spins now. Misc other convenience improvements like quick winterize setup,etc.. Still need to rework cabinet and front t.v. setup and update electronics. Oh. Forgot new airbags and steering box have been done. I want to enjoy driving this thing for a while. Tired of crawling in and out from underneath this thing

Yeah I was the same way. I was so tired of working on the coach that after I finish the interior enough to get on the road the idea of putting the trim pieces back on the walls was too much for me to contemplate and here I am 7 months later still not putting them on. There was a lassitude of no energy remaining LOL. Of course trim is an important and anything that was important was taking care of but still you do get to a point where you don't want to do much but enjoy the coach and travel. Unfortunately these things have a different agenda than we do. I just replaced my air dryer with a remanufactured one. I don't know when the last time it had been done or the canister had been replaced but I'm glad I got it done. I don't have any answer for your particular problem. But I like Chuck's answer and I'm sticking to it.

Annually.
If you found crap in the system. pull the tank drains every couple of running hrs.  That may evict the bad crap and maybe keep the brakes from collecting  stuff.
I would pop a front brake hose and take a peek inside the hose and chamber.

How often should the air dryer be serviced.

Every couple of years.  And I alternate, starting with a FACTORY reman, followed by just filters, followed by FACTORY reman.

The factory reman replaces not only filter(s), but also valves and heater-- basically everything but the metal block.
