Renogy Solar

I have been looking at the Renogy 400 watt solar kit.  Not looking to "live" off it, just want to get some power back into the batteries from using just some LED lights and a couple of hours of TV through the inverter.

Any experience or opinions on the Renogy Solar Kits ?

I have no personal experience with Renogy, but a friend is using one of their charge controllers and says he's happy with it.

I have no experience with Renogy, other than that they have a good reputation.  However I do have over 15 years of RV solar experience.  Before buying the Renogy Kit, I would check out a similar kit with identical  panels, $550, $90 less than the Renogy kit,

Amazon.com : HQST 400 Watt 12 Volt Monocrystalline Solar Panel Kit with 40A...
and a kit from Rich Solar of 400w ($680) and 600 watt ($900), both with free shipping, and also check out the Victron SmartSolar controllers.  600 w Rich Solar kit uses 1 less panel (3, 200w panels) and gives you 50% more capacity for $260 additional over the following Renogy 400w kit for $640.

Is the following Renogy 400 kit the one you are considering?  A link to the one you are looking at would help answer your question.  Send me a personal message on the FT forum if you would rather discuss  this on the phone or by email.

This is one Renogy 400w kit for $640.

My recommendation would be to get a Victron SmartSolar controller from Bay Marine direct or on Amazon, at your selected power starting at $226, which will take you up to 440 watts, and possibly going up to the 50 amp unit ($324), with a capacity of 700 watts, or larger capacity controller for future expansion.

Along with increased capacity controller you will want to oversize wire to controller from your roof to minimize in the future having to resize.

My reason for recommending Bay Marine are many, primarily if you ever need warranty or an RMA.  I would source your panels locally, used or new, approx 300 watt panels might yield more for your money than the Renogy  or Rich Solar kits.  They are often found locally for $125.  Solar wire from Rich Solar assures you of getting the proper copper wire and not copper coated aluminum  wire at a reasonable price.

Also, this is an excellent addition for $131 to know your batteries state of charge, using your phone with Victron application.  You will appreciate being able to measure and and monitor your usage and needs.

Only you know your needs, budget, and experience along with desire to select your own combination.  The Renogy  kit may be a good jumping in point, possible may be your forever system.  For years I traveled with only 150w on both my Monaco Signatures, supplementing with generator and plugging in to shore power.. The FT I started out with 560W, (2) 285 LG panels in 2017, soon went to 1200w adding 2 more LG 335 panels, and a little later went to 1800w adding (2) 305 watt used panels purchased both for $110 each delivered.

If budget is this important to you, HGST has the same panels as you get in the Renogy kit, however, they are by HQST and you save $90.

Going to (2) higher power, approx. 300 watt panels would be my first choice.  Also realize that you do get some benefit from higher end panels such as LG when compared to Renogy.  For example the wind rating of a LG Neon2 335, like I purchased, is double that of a Renogy 300 watt panel, the LG costs about $35 more.  Since I have two LG 335 Neon2 panels mounted at the very front of my RV, this one feature was important to me.

Now a LG 365 watt panel is only $335.

Rather than going with a smaller controller, consider spending just a little more in case you want to add panels in the future. Panels are becoming more and more efficient so the same roof space will produce a lot more watts plus the prices have come way down with the cost around $0.30/watt if you do your homework.

We were the second after Paul Smith to install a large solar system on our coach. It's been almost 13 years and everything is working exactly the way I installed it.

It's just not rocket science so you can easily DIY the whole system and save $$.

Victron gets good reviews and it's compact size makes it easy to install in tight spots but our Midnite 150 is still the top rated controller today. About the only one made in the U.S.A. Read reviews for the top controllers at: Best MPPT Charge Controller (2020) - Solar Charge Controller Reviews

The reviews mentioned above state...
"If you're looking for the best MPPT charge controller for the solar PV system in your RV, the Victron SmartSolar MPPT Solar Charge Controllers are probably the most suitable choice."

This may be in large part because of the integration possibilities.  Lots of good ways to do solar on your coach.  1200 watts is a starting point if you have a residential refrig.  More will extend the full recharge off grid solar year and recharge faster.  Do lots of planning first.

The Midnite controller is a tall unit and won't fit in many locations. I don't like the Victron as well as the electrical connection termainals are undersized in my opinion. Others have commented on the same thing. I like the fan also on the Midnite. About 13 years and no issues. It's on every day.

I have a Renogy Tracer MTTP charge controller and it has worked great for 7 years. Have 500 watts of panels.
