Mobil Delvac 1300 Oil In Our 3126 Cat

FYI
After our Cat 3126 rebuild, I was running Mobil 1300, because I did the research to find out Mobil makes Cat's oil. Started with 10/30, then went to 15/40. Way back we had a discussion and a post about Cat's tech recommendation of 10/30 vs 15/40. Anyway, that is irrelevant now. I'm running 15/40. I think it splits hairs, and 15/40 is the best of both worlds

So on my last oil change, I found out that mobil Delvac 1300 is blended.Doesn't say it anywhere on the bottles, just online. I never realized it was blended. How I missed that, I don't know. I realize synthetics are good, our new car runs it. But in these old industrial diesels it just doesn't seem right (to me).

So at 4K miles is where I have been changing the oil. And it is at about that point it's starting to get real black, which I realize is normal for a diesel. So at this point the engine was starting to puff pretty good smoke out the vent tube. Something it hadn't been doing. So I started thinking, here we go again. It used about 3 qts in 3K miles, which probably isn't bad either. I 'am just paranoid after my engine drama ! Not something I want o go through again.

So after a discussion with my friend, who has rebuilt diesels, and love's synthetic oil, I decided to take the Mobil back, and get Delo straight mineral oil 15/40.

Changed the oil. Zero blowby smoke. Drove it to operating temp, zero blow by. This weeked, drove it 600 miles round trip with my 8K lb race car and enclosed trailer, zero blowby when home.

In my opinion, where as blended might be fine, it's possible it just breaks down easier. It also could just be this brand oil. Not putting down synthetic oil, just passing along my experience.

14K on rebuild, and purring like a kitty cat

Cheers

Not to get in the synthetic oil fight. 15/40 plan old Dino oil fer me, as you know 😎. I do run synthetic in the Jeep, but that's a whole different animal.

Not being on the bottle I just learned a few months back on line that Delvac super 1300 is a synthetic blend. Has me changing this oil change. Are you going to leave 1300 in your hydraulic's and generator until a due service?

Even the tried and true Rotella T 15 40 appears to be gone and replaced with Rotella T4, which after enough reading to bore into a stupor appears to be a synthetic blend.

I didn't use it in either of those. When I was at  FT tech, big discussions about using that weight oil in the Kubota.
If I remember right used something different for the hydraulics  I have it written down.

I can't believe I missed the blended thing...I swear, Mobil just added "Blended" to the website. And why is it not on the bottle?

I was running Rotella in the race car, seemed to work with methanol really good. Super sticky like honey. But run Lucas racing 20/50 (mineral) now.

I even tried Brad Penn synthetic (old Kenndal spec) at like $15.00a qt.( read $195.00 a oil change @13 qts) little too rich for me.

I truly like Shaffers stuff too. My buddy owns a Harley shop (owns a FT also). We run it in the bikes, and he did his Allison with Shaffers synthetic.

OK, looked it up just for the records here:

10/30 Delo in gen set. Was always told 15/40 wasn't correct as a tech.I remember we put bottled oil in for gen sets, and pumped 15/40 in for engines. Not sure it would hurt anything, especially in the summer.

Steering/fan reservoir: I was putting 10/30 Mobil in at the time I rebuilt the engine, so went with 15/40 Rotella (mineral oil) in the reservoir. Glad I didn't put Mobil in there, but might be OK. Not rings and pistons firing fuel. Just lubrication. Shouldn't break down as bad.

I haven't raced since the days of racing what we drove daily.I can't watch it enough and am amazed at any lubricant keeping the engines together with today's racers horsepower and heat. What I comprehend even less is a 2 stroke motor where a thimble of oil is added to gas and keeps running. I Wouldn't have gotten of topic but it's your thread and I am talking lubricants .

Gracerace, when you rebuilt the engine did they have the liner and piston packs assembled as one part or did you have to
assemble the parts yourself,just curious.

3126 Cat is a non liner motor, has to be bored. If it's too far out the block has to be sleeved.

3126 Cat doesn't have liners. Sent the block in, had the one cyl. sleeved. That is why they have the nickname "Throw away motor" (which they are not).
Piston's are 2 piece, only changed top 1/2 ne piston. New rod bearings (which old ones were fine),new  rings, valve job plus a few other parts and gaskets.

Zero turn mowers use mobile one . Most modern hydro systems use some sort of synthetic oil. My HWH is filled with synthetic  .  Stays cleaner longer  .
My 3208 acted kinda like yours with more breather blow by with synthetic  .  It's due for a change now and will get 15/40 Dino  . It burns a little also

"Dino" is great oil......Sad Costco quit carrying. Got mine at Tractor supply. You also might try Jegs or Summit. Free shipping.
I went with 5 gallon pail, and pump it in. Then order extra bottles , of different sizes when I order other parts to help with free freight.

I also use Cat only oil filter. Don't know if it means anything. But several people on here swore by them.

They said "Cats love clean oil, and filters"

Yes, the whole blow by thing, made my heart drop.

I went with the Costco's Kirkland brand 15/40 last oil change used more oil than normal, I'll be going back to Delo 400  when and if I need to add it's time to change. No savings with the Costco brand if am adding midway through the  change interval. Found this to be true with other brands as well over years of operating diesels. I'll stick with Delo 400 from now on.

Is Costco's brand blended, or full synthetic?

Tammy works there, and say's they went all synthetic. I haven't looked.

Chris, what they had on the shelf six months ago was not synthetic for about $11 per gal.

Certainly possible Doug. But it still may be blend. The Mobil doesn't say it anywhere, but online.
Chris

Check their web sight, but the info is from Warren who blends it. But found this:

Very thin ... not good for semi trucks
I own a 2015 Kenworth and bought this used this oil one time, it is very thin and caused the truck to vibrate when going downhill. I would not recommend this product for diesel trucks.

✘ No, I do not recommend this product.

Found this:

"Kirkland Signature Heavy Duty Diesel 15W-40 is blended by Warren Distribution (WD) which is the same oil marketer that makes Walmart's Super Tech brand. ... WD also blends motor oils for major retail chain stores like Meijer in the midwest, and they also blend AmazonBasics oils".

Shaffer guy said "Blended = cheap to make"
