Mobil Delvac 1300 Oil In Our 3126 Cat
FYI
After our Cat 3126 rebuild, I was running Mobil 1300, because I did the research to find out Mobil makes Cat's oil. Started with 10/30, then went to 15/40. Way back we had a discussion and a post about Cat's tech recommendation of 10/30 vs 15/40. Anyway, that is irrelevant now. I'm running 15/40. I think it splits hairs, and 15/40 is the best of both worlds
So on my last oil change, I found out that mobil Delvac 1300 is blended.Doesn't say it anywhere on the bottles, just online. I never realized it was blended. How I missed that, I don't know. I realize synthetics are good, our new car runs it. But in these old industrial diesels it just doesn't seem right (to me).
So at 4K miles is where I have been changing the oil. And it is at about that point it's starting to get real black, which I realize is normal for a diesel. So at this point the engine was starting to puff pretty good smoke out the vent tube. Something it hadn't been doing. So I started thinking, here we go again. It used about 3 qts in 3K miles, which probably isn't bad either. I 'am just paranoid after my engine drama ! Not something I want o go through again.
So after a discussion with my friend, who has rebuilt diesels, and love's synthetic oil, I decided to take the Mobil back, and get Delo straight mineral oil 15/40.
Changed the oil. Zero blowby smoke. Drove it to operating temp, zero blow by. This weeked, drove it 600 miles round trip with my 8K lb race car and enclosed trailer, zero blowby when home.
In my opinion, where as blended might be fine, it's possible it just breaks down easier. It also could just be this brand oil. Not putting down synthetic oil, just passing along my experience.
14K on rebuild, and purring like a kitty cat
Cheers
