Sealand Traveler toilet spring broke

We have the Dometic Sealand Traveler manual pedal toilet.  The pedal on the left side has a metal pedal bar inside a plastic pedal cover.

Yesterday while pressing down on the pedal I heard a spring-like snap, and sure enough the spring BROKE that closes the ball after taking a foot off the pedal.

I went into our spare motorhome parts box and found we had luckily purchased a bag of parts that had a new spring cartridge.

Remove pedal plastic cover, remove two screws holding water valve (no need to remove any plumbing lines or shut off water), remove one lower centered screw and pull out spring cartridge with metal pedal ring.

Do not remove two side by side smaller screws as they hold the cartridge & spring together.  We use plumbers silicone grease on rotating surfaces.  Reverse things to put it back together.  Toilet out of service 20 minutes.

Found Amazon has the Dometic bag of parts at a lower cost than just the spring cartridge (p/n 385 236 096), so we ordered the bag.

Dometic Ball & Shaft Kit - 385318162.  It seems logical to carry a spare to keep toilet from being down.

After we put in new spring cartridge and buttoned everything up, we noticed that the water valve had a drip leak.

The valve had leaked in the past, but stopped, so we continued to use the same water valve.  A few hours after finishing the spring cartridge, our Harbor Freight water leak detector alarmed and we saw the small leak.

So we looked again in our spare parts box and found a new water valve.  All is well again and I wanted to share the part number, so if one is planning to carry a spare spring cartridge, a water valve may also be a good spare to carry.

Sealand Water Valve Kit, p/n 385314349, and Amazon plans to deliver a new replacement next Monday.

Ouch! I just paid $44 at a local RV parts & repair place. This was to replace a valve on a brand new Sealand 511+ that I had put in about 6 weeks ago or so. The supply came up through the pedestal so close that I think it put stress on the valve when I tightened up. When I put the new valve on, I relocated the supply connection using a short length of pix, an elbow, and a screw down flange to to transition to the swivel and then used a soft loop to connect the toilet. So far so good... I will pick up some spare parts though. Hopefully Dometic will send me a valve for free...

We just had a failure on our Model 511h Dometic gravity toilet. I ordered the parts noted in this old post. Any other input on this repair?  At this point I think it's only the spring that has failed.  The foot pedal can still be used to open the ball but the pedal mus5 be manually pulled up to close and water now escapes past the seal. I assume the spring is all that's needed but will wait to hear more from the experts here.  Thanks.

Mine breaks about once a year, I always keep a spare. Poor design. Make sure you get the right color spring cartridge black or white top, they are not the same

Mine appears to be white without totally removing it. I ordered the same parts as noted on Barry's original post.

Success.  I purchased complete rebuild kits including seals so I'd have parts needed for any outcome.  Without removing toilet I was able to replace the spring assembly.  Since it's behind the water valve I decided to replace the valve too.  To my surprise I discovered the new valve would also allow filling the bowl.  Prior to this, lifting the "dump" pedal would not fill the bowl.

This simple gravity toilet is great considering some of the electric and "turbo" toilet tales I've heard.
