DDEC 6V92TA Valve Adjustment

I've searched here to find guidance on Detroit 6V92TA valve lash adjustment interval, to no avail. I found Pierce Stewart's post from years ago on the method of the adjustment, but none on when or how often to do it.

Somewhere I recall a post that said it should be done at 100K miles or 2,600 engine hours. Mine has 87k and 2,800 hours.

I'm working on a list of maintenance procedures that may need to be done before traveling after Jan. 1, and my records do not reflect when, if ever, this has been done. It was something I did rather frequently on my Mercedes turbo diesels.

thanks to all who advise!

Randall,

It's pretty easy but not done as you would imagine. I have the factory wrench for it but you probably have one that will do.  I have a little bug after too much turkey so will find another PDF tomorrow. Might clean the blower by-pass valve at the same time.

Here is a video on it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mHDYHe-xOQM

Randell,

Here are two pages in PDF format. Disregard the third page for injectors.

Pierce,

As always, many thanks for your thorough information and sources.

Sorry you are feeling under the weather.

I'll download this info and determine whether or not I can do this in my limited shop. I did them for years, sitting on top of the M-B OM-617, so I don't see why not. I have Mercedes offset wrenches that worked for that, but this is no doubt SAE. If it comes to it, I'll schedule it into the truck shop and have them do it. In all probability, the adjustment was done @ 50k, but I have no record to that effect, and won't risk it.

Many thanks again!

The MB OM-617 was my specialty. I've overhauled many of these. Dry liners so the block has to be decked after install the liners as they stick up a few thousands. They last forever if you change the oil. Won't make 100K if you don't. I even had some with 5 speeds. The automatic was also a tough transmission plus all older Mercedes automatics could be pull started after reaching about 30 mph in neutral and going back into 1st.  For those not acquainted with the OM617 engine, the valves were threaded and had two nuts, so to adjust the valves, you used a special wrench for the tops of the valve retainers and then two of the special bent wrenches to make the adjustment. I've still got the factory tool $$$$$ to pull the pre-combustion chamber out of the head for each cylinder (5 cylinders).

Look at the video for adjusting the valves. Most any wrench the right size will work.

The later 6 cylinders with the aluminum heads and camshaft direct on the hydraulic lifters were also good.

I loved my Mercedes diesels. I just sold the last W123 300D last Spring. It was a euro delivery 300 with just over 100k miles—barely broken in.
