M11 TACHOMETER INOP

How many M11 owners have a VDO tach that is not working? Mine does not and the Cummins tech I am work with thinks the gauge is too far away from the ECU that generates the signal.  We are looking into it with cummins, VDO, and Foretravel.
How many others have a tach that doesn't work and basically given up trying to fix it.
Thx

I am one.  My tach quit operating about ten years ago.  I spent a lot of time and money having it diagnosed.  The consensus is that the tach instrument head is functioning properly and the wiring from front of coach to engine room is intact. The sensor in the gear portion of the engine has been replaced and still the tach does not work.  I installed the VMSpc system years ago and the tach function on it works flawlessly (as does the engine hour counter which does not functioning on the VDO tach head).

Mine works and correlates with the VMSpec RPM. Hopefully it stays that way...

Mine quit working over a year ago and I put it on the back burner and may get
back to it someday. The tach on the Silverleaf works so it is not a big deal. I like
everything working properly so I may get back to it.

Tach on my 99 U295  8.3  has been inop for a while.  I ordered a new tach from SpeedHut but have not installed it yet.  This is a second step replaced the inop Speedometer a couple of months ago with a SpeedHut GPS unit.  So far so good.

Larry, have you thought about buying (or borrowing) another VDO tach, building a "short" VDO tach test cable and testing the setup?  If it works, then connect the new "proven" tach to the original coach tach wiring to determine which (tach or wiring) is faulty (assuming the engine sensor is good).

Maybe Foretravel has a test cable and tach to test with. Maybe just cleaning up the electrical termination points would help.

We have a 1995 U320 w/ Cummins M11 engine. The tach works well most of the time. There is occasionally a momentary glitch with it which I suspect is caused by an intermittent connection--perhaps at the back of the tach. I don't think there is any problem related to the distance between the engine ECU and the tach.
