If you apply the seal to the frame and then install the frame correctly, the seal will not squeeze out and show more. I really tried to make mine so it would be just shy of flush (1/16") with the outer edge of the window frame. Although "D" shaped, it is actually quite flat even before compression. Maybe 3/4" wide and 1/4" high at most.
It didn't come with caulk and I didn't add any. When I had the entry door window glass removed resealed last year, because of fogging, they wanted to add caulk to the frame and I ask them not to. I have had no sign of leaks since doing all my windows.
I had replaced the entry door glass several years ago and found that it was the only frame without exterior weep holes. I cut some in the aluminum frame before reinstalling.
