disc brake information

Didn't want to add this to the "new tires and other surprises" so it would be easier to find. Some important info for Bob (journey roam explore) Have just finished servicing 3 of the brake calipers 4th later today when it cools off. Mic'd the front rotor and now know that the outer half of the rotor is much thicker than the inner. Over all thickness 1.736" includes the center cooling fins. Outer .878" inner .490" this is the dimensions on my front left rotor and I see no wear. I replaced the two front left slide pins due to some galling. Learned that you can pull the slide pins in the rear with the brakes set. However you cannot feel the center when installing the pin without releasing the brakes.. will post pictures after doing the left rear later today and give more details on the job.

Yes having the caliper held in place unloads the weight. Remove , clean, inspect and reinstall. 👍👍

Does a caliper service require removal of the wheels?

if you are talking about lube and adjustment,  no the wheels don't need to be removed to properly lube and adjust the calipers, I have never tried it but I think the pins can be replaced  with the wheels on.

Following up on the slide pin servicing. The pins have a landing notch in the center for the pin retaining bolt to line up with. On the right rear with the brakes applied I couldn't feel the bolt line up in the center because of too much friction on the pin. Released the brakes as I had blocked the other side incase they needed to be released. Once released I could push the pin in and feel the retaining bolt grab the center. On the left rear the brakes didn't have to be released to slide the pin effortlessly. Every pin came out when I was tapping the puller hole and they started spinning. Wish I knew how to video to explain how to pull the pins if a jury rig puller is necessary as it was the last time I serviced the pins. The coach has over 125,000 mi. and at this rate the lining will out live me.
 Bruce you cannot pull the pins with the wheels on, look at the pictures the pins have to be pulled from the wheel side and the wheel surrounds the pin retaining bolt.
 On the next servicing I will replace the bushings at they are starting to show wear.

Yep I do recall that,  my mistake. But I pull the wheels every 2 years any way to check things over.

Where are the helper springs.  You are shooting yourself in the foot by removing the pins and not installing helper springs as you re-install the pins.

They are there just not in these photos.
