94 Cummins 8.3 fuel pump question

Engine will not start.
It will crank.
Tom says it not getting fuel to the engine.
Took a picture of the fuel pump. I can turn the fitting going into it at the threads.
Is it supposed to do that?

Jo,

You have a mechanical fuel pump on your engine - same as ours.  Any fittings screwed into the pump should be tight.  If they turn, the threads may have cracked or stripped out, and your engine may be sucking air into the pump, causing failure to start.

It looks like that pump is probably original, and due for replacement.  You should be able to buy one at any NAPA dealer.  All the currently available replacement pumps are made in China - even the ones sold by Cummins, so don't worry about getting a "genuine" Cummins pump.  I'll dig up a few part numbers for you and post in a few minutes.

Thanks so much. We are due for yearly service.

The problem was the cotter pin on the fuel solenoid. It fell out. Such a simple thing can make you stranded.
