Leak in driver’s compartment in front of wheel

I found a clean oily puddle on the floor beneath this compartment and opening it revealed about a quart of it floating on the bottom.  I put my finger over the center of the face of this device and removed it while the engine was idling and the oil came spilling out.  It appears the oil has leaked on the the exhaust of the generator - I think??? What is this device?  Is it drivable?  Why put a hole in the middle of it?  Advice?  I actually thought about duct tape but it may not be the best temporary solution.  Please review the pictures

You have a steering box shaft seal leak.  The best solution is to have box removed from coach and rebuilt.  Chalk Truck Parts in Houston is one of several rebuilders.  Ship it to them and they will ship it back better than new.  They replace internal parts that Sheppard chooses not to.

 Sean. Several variable to your questions. Drivability is determined by how far you can go between filling reservoir with oil. I drove across the United States with a gearbox leaking. There is oil misted 1/2 way up the left side of the couch, but I was able to get it back home. IMO don't run it out of oil. Overhaul depends on prior condition. If it worked good prior like mine did I just reseal. If it had loose steering this is a great time to freshen it up. Also a great time to replace oil and filters in reservoir. If your having a shop do the work they probably will opt to have it rebuilt. Don't waist your time putting any oil stop leak products, they will damage the rest of the seals.
