Fuel leak from unknown part.

I have a leak that is happening above the fuel filter on the engine. I'm not too familiar with all the parts on the engine and am wondering what may be the cause of the leak. It doesn't look like the fuel lines as it's above them. It's not the filter housing. Is it some sort of fuel pump?

Edit. Third photo added. Diesel foaming around that nut.

Upon further inspection, I think it's coming from the fuel pump. I'll need to clean it up and see where the leak is coming from.

Little further looking and found it to be leaking at the top nut.

Found a thread with the same issue. Fuel pump leak 99 M11

Will likely have to replace an o ring and a filter of sorts?

Zach,

I can't stress enough that you need to have that area super clean before you remove that cap and filter. Use something like brake cleaner or spray carb cleaner to clean that area and blow away any trash left behind and you will be fine. That post you found has all the part numbers you will need. After looking at the date stamp on that thread it is hard to believe it has been some 4 years since one of these caps has been reported leaking.

I'm just glad I found it.

The whole area was covered in diesel and dirt which created a nice mud. I used a whole can of degreaser and one and a half cans of brake cleaner. The last picture are what it looked like after that.. I will be buying more tomorrow.

What would be nice is knowing the actual size of the o ring or the # for it. The o ring is now $4.20 and the filter is $31. Cheaper than I thought it would be but ridiculous.

I hate to admit that I thought I was being molested when that little filter was ~$7.50. If you have an "O"ring store close they can match it up for you and save $4 just be sure to tell them this goes in ULSD.

Instead of spritzing away flammable hazardous to you solvents, head to a big box store and purchase a gallon of odorless mineral spirits and a hand full of cheap pig's bristle brushes, the $0.88, 1" brushes.  Clip off some of the bristles to give yourself something with which to scrub and go for it.  Then spritz.

PS our on-line resource for o-rings is The O-Ring Store.  They ship fast but by the time you're finished you'll have spent the $4.20 because of shipping and a $5 minimum order.
FWIW I placed two orders with them in quick succession recently because, as always, I nail the 3 int4egers to the right of the decimal point.  To the left? 1" 2". something like that.

Zach,

Well, were you able to get a new filter and O ring installed and stop the leak?

Yes I purchased from Cummins. Received it in about four days. Took about 20-30 minutes to replace. Most of that was cleaning and coming in and out of the engine bay to get stuff I forgot.

I go to NAPA to find O rings. They have a good stock, especially the stores that do trucks. I replaced the two O rings in the fuel primer pump on the U300 with a cost of $0.20 for both. We are nothing but ULSD with 5% to 100% biodiesel here in California. I've not had any problems with hoses or O rings even in the '84 car.
