Dometic Penguin II Replacement Shroud

So I see there is two styles of shrouds. Vented and unvented. Mine has the unvented. Would there be any advantage going to the vented shroud?. Im generally in excessively hot environments.

Vented is required if yours has heat pump mode.

Unvented is fine for air conditioner only models.

Okay mine are the heat pump but unvented? No problem going to the vented then? I should have looked closer when I was removing my old one. Mainly concerned about rain water

Also when I was removing, two of the screws were missing and it although it is complete its filled with spider cracks. Really glad I looked at it. Will have to take a look at the rear one. Im sure it's in the same state.

Brain wayback machine activated...  look at Icon shrouds for a more durable option.  Brett's post in this topic helps cross-reference and note comments about reinforcing mounting holes in the shroud:

So there was a locally advertised Icon shroud advertised in a town about 2 hours away. I told the guy if he ends up coming within a half hour driving time from me I would meet him. About a month later he called. Purchased the vented version Icon for $60. Will install nut plates or clip nuts on my units and new stainless hardware. Probably have to order the other or bend up a metal one eventually. One down anyway.

Scott, I installed fender washers on all four screw attachments.  I would also recommend a fiber washer with the fender and screw for non issues.  You got a great price on the cover and I went with the vented ones as well.  I have two heat pumps and one that is just air.  When I replace my units, will go the Furrion route and no heat pumps.  Just don't use them!  I know you will come up with a better way than the fenders, I know how your great mind works!  lol

Wow! "vented vs unvented", had no idea, just replaced what blew off.
We have heat pumps on ours, very rarely used but so far no issues.
Did use the fender washers.

So installed. Cut the worthless stamped threads out of the housing and installed U-nuts, clip on nuts. New #8 stainless hardware and stainless large area washers. Bonded washers to the shroud with RTV # 157. Will never be able to remove them. I also grabbed a handful on the side and with hand force in an undamaged area could easily tear a section out. It was at End of Life. Glad I randomly replaced and will order a matching cover for the rear. I also think I see no down side to the ventilation holes and will order the same. It's always hot here and they should help. I even thought about making them bigger or adding more?

In addition to the fender washers, we fiberglassed some hanger strap on the inside of the mounting slots of our shrouds as additional reinforcement.

The adhesion characteristics of poly vinyl resin aren't real great on plastics. Too closed and slick. The adhesion characteristics of the 157 are quite impressive with the down side being that it is so difficult to remove once cured. 72 hours. Remains very firm yet flexible. Also very hi temperature operating range. When we picked up the coach my son Anthony had rapped the mount points with 600MPH aluminum tape inside and out. It was still in place, just the plastic housing is at end of life. Anything to expand the mounting edge distance will be a plus for sure. Just a screw is about one inch of mounting length around the head. A 1' washer is over 3" edge distance. The Icon cover is thicker also. Ill report back in a couple decades on how its holding up

Scott a negative to vented is your old buddy the dirt dobber.
I recently serviced my 2 roof units. PO replaced them new right before we bought the coach. First service as far as I know. They both have the vented covers and the base of the unit also has large vented areas. I removed several dobber nests, a few wasp nests, as well as 2 bird nests. I covered the larger base holes with net wire, and covered the lid holes with regular screen held in by hot glue. Units work as they should and now hopefully no more critters.
