Allison HD4060r Capacity

I am ready to change the fluid and filters in the Allison HD4060r transmission in my 1995 U320. I've seen conflicting information on the amount of fluid required. Yes—I'll be using Castrol Transynd 668 fluid. How much fluid will be required when I change the two filters and remove the drain plug to completely drain the sump?

David.....I changed my Trans fluid also but I do not know the capacity of the 4060R...since mine is 4060 no retarder. All that aside when you pull the filters down "Note" the lower seal on the bottom  cap with the bolts are they square or round ? Early 4060 had square seals and must be replaced with "square" seals NOT the round oring type that comes in the Allison kit you get from current suppliers. If you need Square seals these folks can help.

Less than 10 gallons.  When I changed mine a couple of years ago it seems I recall buying 10 gallons and I have a full unopened gallon left.  Getting ready to change it again and I bought two five gallon pails.  Expecting to have another gallon plus left over.

When I changed my trans oil I asked the Allison dealer here how much I needed and they
were within half a gallon.

The synthetic should last a lifetime on the RV work load.  Why would you change it a second time. ?
Just like using synthetic inthe diff. The change time goes from  30 k to 100 k .

Does that include the filters? Or do you have to drain the trans to change them anyway? Getting my ducks in a row to do all the maintenance this winter. The trans fluid was changed in 2020 with transynd and does not have many miles on it. Was not going to change it but was debating filters.

Or at least have fluid analysis done once changed to synthetic to see when it's time to change (or if there are any issues to investigate)...

According to Allison, when you first change to Transynd you still have to follow the fluid change interval for conventional fluid.  After the second fluid change with Transynd you can follow the extended fluid change interval.  I believe that the filters can be changed with minimal fluid loss.

All correct!

IIRC, the book says 39 qts for a full fluid replacement (including converter) in the 4060r.  Check the book for sure.

When I changed my fluid and filters the Allison dealer told me that I would need between 10 and 12 gallon--put in 10gallon and start checking your shift pad to see when it reaches the full level he stressed to NOT use the dipstick.  He also said they have one model with short filters (uses less oil) and one with tall filters-- mine was the tall filters.  best I remember I put in about 11 gallons.
He also stressed to NOT over fill the transmission
