LP generator fuel filter

Took my fuel filter apart to see its condition as my generator quit on me a few weeks ago and now it wont start. Is the filter supposed to be foam or is it a hard type filter. Mine looks like it might have been foam at one time, but has atrophied into a hardened cylinder. My first time with this filter so I'm not sure what it's supposed to look like, or feel like. I have the manual, but it just shows the filter. I haven't gotten the new filter yet so I have nothing to compare it to. Any thoughts?

Think you mean the AIR FILTER,if it's foam and hard it's not letting air in,if your gen is LP gas you have no fuel filter,if you can, post a picture, try and clean/blow any foam pieces downstream of the filter.

No, it's the fuel filter, it's like a small cylinder tube made of stone. I verified with Red Tractor that it's indeed a stone like material. It looked clean, no oil or other contaminants. I reinstalled it, verified the fuel lock solenoid was working, cleaned my carburetor adjustment screw and it fired up and ran good. It was a happy ending and a great learning experience .I've attached a picture of the fuel filter housing (circled in red) and a similar fuel element (mine was grey, forgot to take a picture)
