Rear pinion seal leaking

Or yoke seal, depending on what you are used to. Mine is leaking and there is seepage running from the driveshaft down. It was not bad but after our latest trip, it has gotten worse so I need to address it.

I have changed them before but not in anything this large. I will change the oil in the diff since IDK when it was done last.  Anything special regarding this? Seal is A1205H2426 is appears.

Thanks John. Both the leak and play in the shaft were items that Keith noted on my pre-inspection. I talked to Keith last night, (good to hear from him!, he is staying really busy) and asked more about this. To clarify, the play is vertical movement, not rotational. I do have a small amount of movement but no vibration when driving like others have reported.

I started calling some places to address the P3 issue and will have them also replace the pinion seal since it's right there when the shaft is removed. I know S&S in Longview is very familiar, but if there are closer places to ATX, I'd like to hear. Houston or Dallas are OK. I do have a call in with S&S in SA, they will call me back tomorrow.

To clarify, the driveshaft turns a bit as it should, this is normal. The movement that should not be there is up and down, this is where the play is. As an example, when you check ball joints on a car/truck, you don't grab it at the 3 and 9 o'clock positions, all that would do is turn the wheel.  Instead, you lift the tire up and grab it at 12 and 6 o'clock positions and try to move it. Or you can also take a pry bar and put it under the tire and try to move it. This is what Keith did, he put it at the notch below the damper at the 6 o'clock position and moved it.

That said, Rudy have me the # of a shop in Houston, I will call them tomorrow and see if they can do. Thanks again Rudy, it was great chatting with you and hope to see you sooner than later! ;)

I found the same leak on the way home from Nac last month and plan to replace it today.  What size are the u-joints and does anyone know the cap bolt torque specs?

This would be for the ISM450 and Allison 4000R in my '03 U320.

PM me if you decide to tackle the P3 carrier bearing slop issue. I have the Allison tools to make the repair. Happy to loan them out!

Got this done yesterday.  Took about 2 hours, taking our time, for myself and Fourdayoff (huge thanks again!).  That driveshaft is HEAVY.  I'd guess nearly 100#.  Both u-joints were in good shape, but we did have to replace one zerk that wouldn't take grease.  Lubed's both on the bench after cleaning everything.  Got the new seal installed, and put in new o-rings on the bolt and plate in the yoke while we were there.  The yoke bolt is 95 ft-lbs torque.  Very nice of Spicer to put the u-joint cap bolt torque spec (115 - 135 ft-lbs) on the caps!  Seems like a lot, but it pulled without issue.  Back on the road.

I'm confused, what was/is leaking, the trans end or the differential end?

What's going on with the air bag.  Looks like an odd position.

Robert,

That is on the tag axle and you are seeing the arc that it swings when inflated. It does look strange in that pic. though.

That's what they look like when the coach is in full raise on the blocks.  Those were just replaced a few weeks ago by Reish RV.
