Check engine light on

Last year after having the valves adjusted and the boots on the turbo line replaced, I started getting an intermittent check engine light for high voltage on the turbo wastegate. I asked the mechanic about it and he said I did not have a turbo wastegate and wasn't sure what the problem was. It would come and go periodically. The past weekend we took a trip and halfway into our 2 Hour Drive the check engine light came on and stayed on and was on the whole ride home. I'm not sure where to start, if anybody has any ideas that I can check before taking it to a shop I sure would appreciate it. Here's a couple of pictures of what the dash and vmsPC showed the problem was.

Just in case the Silverleaf is misconfigured, do the in-dash switches work to provide a blink code?

Also, if that's a glass dash, it looks like you can possibly navigate and get the collection of error codes/dates:

I would plug your engine serial number into Cummins QuickServe Online and look up that code under the service tab. That ECM was used on multiple engine types. Whatever wire it's referencing was used on your coach to control something and was used in a different engine to control the waste gate on the second turbo. Without knowing which wire out of the ECM that code is referencing, it's going to be tough to troubleshoot.

I called and talked to a tech today at a company called ECM King, very nice people. I know a couple of people that have had their ECM's worked on there, anyway, he said, he thought that a ground had come loose somewhere that he had knowledge of this problem from another person and they found that a ground had come loose. He didn't think it was the ECM. So looking at my motor yesterday I don't remember seeing any loose wires, but this electrical piece is plugged into a plug on the wiring harness on top of the motor near the turbo. There are wires plugged into it that I think the previous owner added to this electrical piece. The other side of the electrical piece goes to ground. Does anyone know what this green piece is or does? The previous owner, JCuz here on the forum, is no longer with us so I cannot call and ask him. This green electrical piece has wires coming out of both sides one side the wires go to ground the other side the wires go into a plug out the wiring harness. Some of the wires on this green piece look questionable at their connections and if I knew what it was, I would buy another and replace it. Any help anyone can give me on ID in this piece would be greatly appreciated.

Jcuz put a resistor there to make the ecm think there was a waste gate. Then he had the ecm programmed to 500 hp. I don't remember the value of the resister.

Damn! That's why I love this forum! How in the heck did you remember that? anyway I'm a little over my head now when it comes to electrics, but why did he want to trick the ECM to think there was a wastegate because to my knowledge there is not one with any kind of mechanical device. Was that needed to bump up the hp on the motor? And so I assume the plug he plugged into is the one that would go to a wastegate if the turbo had had one. I was thinking about unplugging it and see if the check engine light went away, also assuming that I won't damage anything buying hooking that resistor. I did look at the resistor when I took the picture and a couple of the connections looked questionable, I'm at least gonna go look at it again closer tomorrow and may try my unplugged attempt also to see if the check engine light clears. Thanks for the info. I may call the ECM place tomorrow and see if I could talk to that tech again and see what he can tell me now that I know this part of the story.

The ECM is now programmed to believe there is a wastegate. Un plugging it will surely bring up errors. It would be possible to have it reprogrammed to a 450 hp. if you want to remove it. I spoke to Jim about the resistor fooling the ECM about the wastegate and if you follow the thread Michelle posted you can get all the information on why he was not worried about hurting the engine.

Thanks Michelle, guess I should have read down further before I replied to craneman.. I have never read that old thread and it tells me a lot I didn't know and sounds like I'm narrowing down my problem. Thanks... I need to get more proficient on using that search feature...

Update: after reading the thread that Michelle posted and taking the information that Craneman posted, I went over today and redid the connections, soldered a couple of wires at the end of the resistors and unplugged and reseated the plug back in and the check engine light cleared. I started the motor three times and it never Came back so hopefully it was just a bad connection. I can say that when it was put together it was not what I would consider a good job. Now all the connections have new butt spices solder and it's done right. Now I have to research to see if I want to keep it at 500 hp or go back to 450. I need to research the pluses and minuses of how it is now. I still don't understand why the ECM needs to think there is a wastegate on the turbo to get the 500 hp.

Because the factory 500 hp engines have a turbo with a waste gate and the ECM monitors it. Also not all 450 hp engines can be updated to the 500 hp. After talking to Jim I called Cummins with my cpl numbers and my engine does not have the stronger updated block and components. Jim's research made sure his engine could take the 500 hp.
