dish receiver heating up

I have gone to a Hi Def receiver that records from a standard receiver from Dish Network. The receiver is mounted in top cabinet next to TV where original equipment was.

The HD receiver runs so hot it shuts down and has to cool off.  I am thinking about mounting a fan in void behind cabinets and putting a fake speaker grill for ventilation under cabinet.

Has anyone solved this problem?

Yes I have & it works great. My Tivo never gets hot now.

We have the same problem. Our Dish DVR is the VIP722 and it gets to about 145 and shuts down. We use a small fan, which helps a lot. I would like to find a way to switch the fan on and off with a thermostat. I just don't know where to find the control.

I added an Air Conditioning thermostat to the fans to turn them On and Off automatically.

Barry, how did you wire that up? Are your fans 12 volt or 110? Did you use a relay?
I should have guessed that you would already have done this.  ;D

We run a standard def receiver (not DVR), but here's Steve's 12V fan with its "isolation mounting"

I should have guessed that you would already have done this.

They are 12vdc Muffin fans (computer fans).
There is a relay in the thermostat that changes with the set temperature.
I took 12vdc to the fan and ran it thru the relay terminals on the thermostat.
Just like you would wire it to run your home HVAC that turns it on when the temperature gets to that point.
Very easy installation.

Another option is to use a 120 volt fan and the switched outlet present on most sat boxes.

Larry. I too have added a computer 120v fan to the electronics cabinet and I do not have HD, television, still gets hot. Mine is not as fancy as Steve and Michelle's. I just sit mine on some Velcro to hold it in place. My cabinets already had louvres, guess Foretravel learned something. There is a lot of heat up there. Also remember to disconnect the receiver when not in use, it still heats up even when turned off!
No RV! Have hung up the keys.

I will be adding a fan and a battery back up. I just had the new louvered door made up at FT as well. That should keep the heat at bay.

Does the Dish receiver have a USB connector? If so, you could use a laptop cooler plate. Took all the fire out of my laptop, only 20 bucks and no drama!
