7KW Power Tech Generator is smoking - help!

Running generator today and suddenly smelled something like wires burning.  I turned off generator, let it cool down and then restarted it.  It started smoking from the windings within the generator.  What causes this?  Any suggestions for repair?

This doesn't sound good at best. Without seeing the unit it sounds like one of the windings have shorted out. If this is the case it could be a bearing went bad and let the stater and rotor come in contact. One of the bars in the rotor could have come loose. There are several things that could cause the smoke none of them good. The generator end may have to be replaced. In any case it needs to be looked at by someone knowledgeable with generators.

Yup,
There seems to be a rash of Power Tech issues lately.  Must be the time of year.  Mine turns out to be cracked fuel hose.  Not an electrical issue, but equally expensive.
 
Sounds like Pamela & Mike's problem is a control board issue.  The controls should have shut down the engine if not trip the brakers from overload.  Could be as simple as a bad circuit breaker that allowed the overload, but then, what's causing the overheating?
