Check Engine Light

This light came on after about 2 hours of travel yesterday; we were scared, having never experienced this. We finally found a place to stop. All instrument gauges were normal. I turned the engine off and checked the coolant and oil levels; both were normal. I left a message for James T to get advice. He called about 1/2 hour later. That warning light did not persist after turning the key ON and did not return after starting the engine again. James said that means it is a Inactive code, Active codes will keep the warning light on. He thought it was probably a sensor connector and that we should go ahead a drive it; we did without further problem. His only suggestion was maybe sitting on the engine and disconnecting and then reconnecting the weather  proof sensor connections. The Diagnostic switch behind the dash will only read Active codes. James said if it happens again we should take it to a shop that can read Cummin's codes and to NOT turn the engine Off until they check it. If the Check Engine light is Off they will have to drive it until it comes back on and will charge labor.
Anybody have any ideas or know how to locate the different sensor connectors?
Thanks, Dick

Next time you go by a Cummins shop, DO have them read the code(s).

Peace of mind if nothing else.

I had a recent issue which sounds similar, my engine light came on then off and the engine seemed to have power loss.  I have a silver leak and it indicate various yellow codes which I was told okay to continue driving. The problem was that various engine wires had been frayed due to rubbing from engine vibration.  The wires were replaced and the engine is running much better even feels as I have more power than I had in a while so I guess the problem was there for a while till it finally caused the light to come on.

The SIlverleaf VMS PC will keep the codes and read them for you if you have one thrown.  IT will tell you in english what it is too.
