Rust!

This post is related to the one I just put up regarding tank gauges. Anyhow, after getting behind the paneling so I could get at the tanks I see that the divider between the black and gray tanks is completely rusted out. It doesn't look like it really supports anything. Any suggestions on what to do about it. I was thinking about smearing on some POR-15 or some other rust inhibitor. I have no idea how it got so bad as there isn't any sign of a leak now but it must have been wet for years for this amount of damage. Also, there are particles of some kind of insulation or something (the green stuff). Thanks.

Follow up: For you 225 and 240 folks, I also asked James about this rust issue. He advised me that this is just a divider wall and not a big deal. Whew!

Did James have any thoughts on what may have caused this problem?

James' reply sounds right.  Just remember that were there's smoke, there's fire.  Find the cause of the moisture in the area and fix it.  Try to remove as much corrosion as possible.  Consider applying a rust inhibitor...if a metal use Ospho, if not bondo as a filler as well...good luck.

It occurs to me that the cause of the moisture in that area may be condensation on the outside of the tanks.

Moisture on the tanks? Could be. I can't see anything to fix right now as the area remains dry. Initially, I was thinking of painting on some rust inhibitor. I think I will keep a close watch on the area for any sign of moisture. Right now, I can't seen any source. Of course, the tanks are right below the toilet, shower and sink. I'll post if I find out anything. Actually, I forgot to ask James what might have cause it. I'll check back with him.
