Windshield wipers broke off during storm

Just curious if any of u have had your wipers break.  Our drivers side wiper broke completely and fell out straight in front of couch.  Thankfully we had just pulled off the road or I don't know what we would have done on a 2 lane road with no shoulders. Scary to say the least.  We were only 13 miles from home and when the rain eased up we just drove with no wipers. New wipers on order from FOT.

I am wondering what broke, the arm, the shaft, the blade or just what actually broke ?
Normally when things break, it is caused by some abuse somewhere in the past. 
An interesting comment to say it just broke completely.
Glad you were close to home.

Dave just asked the question I was going to ask.  I've had wiper inserts start to come out of the holder while driving, but never lost the entire wiper.  This is one item for which we have back ups on hand.

Wiper assemblies are pretty stout, at least on my "91 GV ORED.  I could see them being lifted in a storm but not broken off.  Only wiper blade I had broken off was the result of a drunk in the French Quarter that decided that my 1970 Datsun 510 posed some threat to him!

It broke half way up and laid straight out pointing like an arrow down the road.  LOL. We have two complete assemblies on order so we will have a spare with us.  If it had just been the blade we could have switched the good one over BUT no it was right in the middle connector.  My husband said in all his 72 years he has never had a windshield wiper to break. LOL

If you search the archives you will see my experience resulting from the driver's side pivot shaft fracturing during a storm.  The wiper arm was still OK, it just wouldn't move.

I use rainx and as a result rarely use the wipers.  Makes a huge difference.  I remember reading there was a wiper recall a number of years ago. It might be worth a call to FT to see if yours was ever done.

Thanks for the info. I will ask FOT about the recall Monday.  I love your Cavalier. I had 3 Cavaliers and just buried the last one a few months ago. I love them so much and it nearly killed me to loose them at such young ages. My good friend is the number one breeder in the USA.
