Flat Screen TV Mods

So which is better to use the new LCD LED TV's?  Are these more energy efficient as are LED lights?  The mod I did two years ago is already obsolete?  I used the Toshiba LCD TV's both front & back which have a wonderful picture.

I think the LEDs are hard to beat as to price, picture, weight, thickness and thus far in our experience, durability.  Our Samsung 32" has preformed flawlessly over the last year.  We just bought another one for the house.  Another nice feature of the LEDs is that they don't collect dust on the screen!

LED LCDs are only about an inch thick and use anywhere from 10 to 50% less energy than conventional LCD screens, depending on the brand and report. Both use LCD technology but the new models use LEDs to backlight the display. LCD only use a cold cathode florescent tube while LED LCDs use LEDs for backlighting hence less power used. The lighter weight will put less strain on wall or ceiling mounts while driving. This could be important with a really large display.

Using less energy equates to less heat, which is a good thing since ventilation becomes less of a concern.

Also, some (not all) LED-backlit LCD TVs dynamically control the backlight level of the LEDs in order to gain better contrast (blacker blacks).

Compared to the 80+ lb tube TVs that have been coming out with the digital broadcast move its going to take a pretty BIG LED or LCD screen to compare.  the strength has already been built into most FTs.

Our U300 has a big flat wall in the main salon on the other side of the bathroom sink wall (passenger's side). I installed a substantial commercial wall mount using all the available wall mounting holes and utilizing a couple of in-wall vertical "studs" and then installed a 42" Samsung LCD. I still have to stuff a couple of folded towels between the wall and TV to keep the wall mount from flexing a bit while going down the road. Nice to have a lighter, thinner LED style to fit almost against the wall with a custom mount.

I do remember a 21 inch CRT computer monitor so heavy I could only carry it a few feet at a time. It would not have gone on the wall.

LED backlighting does have several advantages over CCFL backlighting, but many advantages are frequently overstated. For example, How Much of a Power Hog is Your Flat Screen TV? shows that in some cases there is a significant power consumption difference, and in other cases there is a much smaller difference. CCFL LCD Tvs are far from obsolete. The best approach is to shop by picture quality and price. The TV that provides a beautiful picture at a beautiful price is the one to buy!

LCD LED and LCD tvs are both LCDs, just use different lighting and either type can have wide or medium viewing angles.  It sounds unnecessary to consider in a mh, but as I looked at the tv from recliner tv and sofa, some sets were noticeably better. The best way I found to test was to view in a store where they had a variety of sets, stand off to the side, look at them. I liked the LED Samsung 32 as others did in this thread.  Heat, viewing angle and weight advantages.  On mounting, I did one with a tilting mount and that took some southern engineering to keep proper behavior when driving, then I converted to the plywood backing mount, was better.  Mike

The beat (and Capitalism) goes on.................Arguably, the biggest news, in the currently ongoing, Las Vegas, CES (Consumer Electronics Show), has been the unveiling of Samsung's and LG's 55 inch OLED technology (Sony demonstrated it a while ago in 11 inch format).
    • OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) large screen technology makes LED/LCD technology look as obsolete as a 1970's CRT set.
       
    • TV thickness is one sixth of one inch (imagine the applications for that!)
       
    • Pure Black
       
    • Lightning fast Refresh (measured in millionths of a second) (Action, as in football games or NASCAR will be pure immersion)
       
    • Accurate across the entire color spectrum, including Blues and Yellows
       
    • Predicted cost of $10K later in 2012 (for the 55 in. set)
So,as in when Plasma and LCD came out, OLED will OWN the market in 3 or 4 ??? ??? ??? ? years. Can one even buy a CRT TV today?
This is a generational breakthrough and the largest breakthrough since CRT's were challenged by Plasma.  GOOGLE "OLED" for info.

Holey Schmoley, Neal...I'm gonna have to wait a few years on that.  I still have a Toshiba CRT TV from 1990.  It still works great.  I think technology will have to wait a bit more for me.  The latest technology TV's we have are the Toshiba units we installed in Forrest in 2009.  At home the latest technology is a 2002 huge Sony projection TV... :headwall:

But...we're debt free... ;D

Sounds like the making of a roll up screen in OLED design, provide a very large screen when not needed just roll it up like a window blind.  :o  You gotta love the new toys ;D

I know just what you mean.
Technology improvements are often a mix of fiction and fad with questionable "real" improvement. 
We still have a pair of 1990's SONY PIP, digital front end, analog CRT display sets (32" and 36") at home. 
Partly because they exceed the 1080p (progressive scan) technology, which, in that screen size, is overkill for any cable digital programming (all cable is 720p at best), but these CRT sets still do very well against even plasma technology for Blu Ray DVD's which have true 1080p. 
Another part is that the smaller set weighs over 150 lbs and the larger set over 200 lbs and who wants to move that when it's all built in and still doing very nicely, thank you very much. 
The final part is that the analog CRT function has always had a "mellowness" to me (vs the harshness, especially on action scenes, on LCD/LED sets), similar to vinyl recordings vs. digital CD's. 
I enjoy them all but now OLED will definately add a confusion factor.  I've seen OLED in small format (3" X 4") and the resolution/action clarity is mind boggling.

I'm at CES, but have yet to actually hit the exhibit hall.  Hope to see all of this stuff tomorrow!  I've only seen OLED in small form factor as well!

Well the OLED sounds amazing from what you all report.  I usually like latest technology but often the price is outlandish for a long time.  Is this now available in a 32 inch tv and if so, what is the price?  Plasma at first was so expensive, then LCD came along, pricing changed.  Once pricing becomes affordable, Neal the potential variety of applications you and others suggested seem to test the imagination.  Install them other than at the front, on walls now we cannot use for tvs?  I am not sure that would be a benefit, but it might,especially in the bedroom?  Or small personal screens by your chair, connect in your laptop? Stretches the imagination even if beyond our reach today. Thanks for the reports.

I bet you could stick these OLED TV's to the wall with industrial velcro (hook & loop).
