''T'' handle cargo bay door locks

Can anyone tell me if there is another source for the ''T'' style push button cargo bay locking handles other than FOT

I'd like to know this also. I called FOT and they wanted $45 apiece. I want to replace all 10. $450 yuck! Hopefully they are out there somewhere cheaper. Help!

Ken,

Try Encore in Nac. Welcome to Encore Motorhomes Robert McGrath.  Also, try Custom RV and Motorhome Painting, Custom RV Paint Design, RV Paint Repair, James or Jennifer Stallings.  Used RVs, Motorhomes for Sale, and Consigned sales - PPL Motor Homes may be of help.

Last winter I was parked next to an older NATIONAL RV MH and they had the same style latches as my 95, I have searched the Internet but so far have not found these, hopefully someone here will turn up some.  They have to be a vendor part from somewhere.
In the meantime,  I have disassembled mine, lubed them with silicon and so far they still operate.  The most troublesome one was the main bay door on the right, I removed it and swapped it with the generator door as it is not opened and closed all that often.  Key is upside down but that is not a disaster.

Thanks Keith! I just ordered one to see if it's the same. The picture they show it looks like the shaft is a couple of inches long. Mine is only an inch and is threaded. I'm hoping I can disassemble and use my shaft.

Ken,

Reading off the drawing the square shaft length is either .779" (just over 3/4") or 1.779" (just over 1 3/4")

Hi Ken

I was wondering how that worked out for you - I was looking to do the same.  TriMark wants $40 a pop for them - ouch!  Please post with results.  Thanks

@Christis I received the T-Handle I ordered and it is a perfect match except for the shaft. I took it to a local locksmith and had him change out the shaft from my existing T-Handle with the new one for $5.

There are a couple of issues. The new T-Handle has a 120° of rotation vs the 90° for the existing. This is a problem on the smaller doors that only have the latch attached to the T-Handle without the rods. Not a big deal but it allows the T-Handle to rotate past the 90° and can be confusing which way you need to turn to close. (sorry that wasn't a very good description) I think I may be able to trade out the stop limit with the original. The other issue is that the seller on e-bay cannot provide locks keyed alike. He just has "hundreds in a box" that he sends out. I'll have to have a locksmith rekey em'.

I ordered 10 of the T-Handles for $200 including shipping which puts the price at $20 apiece. I plan to dissect the original one I ordered and see if I can do the shaft change out myself. That will save $5 bucks apiece but will still have to have em' rekeyed which will probably run $5 apiece. :) I have a friend who has done a little locksmithing so might get him to help and see if I can rekey myself.

Once I get going on this I'll do a write up and post pictures of the process. Sounds like a good project for this weekend. I'll ask the DW for permission. :)

I believe this part number from McMaster Carr is the part. The part is shown in a 2006 catalog (catalog 112) but I do not see it online however if you plug in the part number in a search at their web site the part shows up with the same description as the old catalog. Before ordering they can probably e-mail a picture or data sheet. I don't have a scanner here otherwise I would have included a picture.

With help from my trusty new lock ring tool I was able to disassemble my new T-Handles and substitute the shafts. See the before and after pics below.

Once you remove the lock-ring on the bottom the unit disassembles easily. Slide off the cover exposing the lock pin. Compress the sleeve and the spring loaded lock pin will shoot across the room bounce off the wall and land behind the couch. Good luck finding it. :) Pull the shaft out of the old unit and place in the new one. Then reassemble. It was really easy after about the 3rd one.

I couldn't figure out how to disassemble the locking mechanism. I did brute force one of the old locks hacksawing off the end then using a punch to push the lock out the front. I couldn't figure out how to remove one without destroying it. :( I decided to just label the keys D1, D2, D3 ... & P1, P2, ... and keep on a large key ring. The picture below shows both keys for each lock I'll break them up between 2 keys rings after I buy some labels for the keys.

Hope this is a little bit helpful to someone out there.

Forgot to mention that I was able to reuse the sleeve from the old T-Handle for the doors that didn't have rods to act as stops. This changed the rotation limit of the T-Handles from 120° to 90°.

I couldn't figure out how to disassemble the locking mechanism.
It's done with a special master key that Trimark makes for these locks.  I believe you have to be a manufacturer or registered locksmith to get one.  You insert the master key and it released an internal clip that holds the tumbler assembly in.  At least this is how I saw the newer TriMark locks work at CC when I worked there.  I went through the same thing you did but with just one latch.  I choose to use the same handle so I wouldn't have different keys.  One of the little pieces inside broke so the handle was OK.  The master key at CC did work with my older locks - the key slots were a completely different configuration.  If you're inclined you might try a locksmith to see what they say about.  I purchased the latch at McMaster-Carr in 2008 and then again for a second bad latch in late 2010.  Their handles rotate only 90 degrees.  When I first saw your post I wanted to tell you about McMaster-Carr but couldn't find them online and figured they stopped selling them.
Thanks for sharing your experience with them - brought back memories of those parts flying through the air.  BTW - I've had success repainting one the latches - I plan on doing the rest when I get down that far on my list.
