lifting tag axle/sagging rear end

We have a new to us 2008 40' with lifting tag, when the tag is lifted the rear end loses ride height and if not on level ground the tag wheels don't seem to clear the pavement.  I wait to see if the air bags on the drive axle will increase the
ride height, but  the rear end appears to be lower than when the tag was down.....draging the rear rock deflecter etc.
Can anyone advise if this is normal and when is it necessary to lift the tag?

It is not necessary, but if I need a smaller turning radius or in a tight campground I will lift the tag to help with maneuvering.

Ditto to what Barry said, I also will raise it (when I remember of course) when doing the sharp initial backup turn so I don't dig up the pavement / gravel.

When we lift our tag, our experience is that the back end will squat down, but it does recover to "ride height" in a minute or under.  When you lift that tag the remaining rear air bags need to pump up to compensate for the increased weight they are seeing so its just takes a moment to recover.

Lifting will also save on your tag tire wear.
