Removal of Joey Bed for Access to Storage Bay

I've searched the forum and Googled the Internet but can't find definitive information on this. I have sliding beds on our U225 that I *think* are Joey Beds but I'm not sure. They are carpeted and secured until I push one button on the left. This releases the catch mechanism. The beds then slide out until they are stopped.

Because it's difficult for me to get down and look at things I haven't actually looked hard at the underside of the bed to determine how to set the bed free, pull it out, and set it on the ground. I have to get into that bay in order to install a new battery charger/converter.

Is there an easy method? I do have the DW around to give me a hand with it.

To remove a joey bed, slide it most all the way out. As you are sliding it the last little bit, pick up slightly on the outer end.  That will free the bed from the track and allow you to lift it out.  You will "feel" when you can lift it.

Why remove the bed it the wife is around to help?  Think of it a the carpeted creeper, slide it out, unload, lay your self down, with a pillow, tools and head light, and have her slide you in to work on your charger.  Hopefully she will want to release and slide you out again when you have completed the task.

Two reasons: 1) I might not fit as well as I would have when I was 25; and, 2) "Hopefully she will want to..." isn't quite good enough...  :P

Well as Clint Eastwood once said, "a man's got to know his limits".  Good luck.  I crawled across my bay to check the model number on the new converter, and was glad Kent Speers had already replaced it for me.

We removed the slider when We replaced the converter on our 225. I'm pretty flexible but I really needed a bit more room to do the job. It's a pain taking out the slider but I think it's worth the trouble. You just gotta wonder at the placement of some common items in these rigs. Keeps it interesting though!

I'm waiting for nicer weather to get some jobs done on the coach. Between wet and cold and having a safety observer (the DW) around it gets difficult. Our area set new records for wet in March and we have puddles everywhere. I could pull the rig into the shop except that the spots where the coach can go are full of other things. Life is such a compromise.

Once it warms up (it's 31F right now) I'm going to get the Joey Bed out and recon the bay and see what all I have to do. I have a Progressive Dynamics 60A converter which is much smaller than the smart charger I put on the Carver sport fish boat; although the one on the boat has separate connections to each of 3 batteries. I also have the little pendant which I guess I'll put in the battery bay.

It's 29.1 outside right now and suspose to go down to 26 before morning.  Anyway, I'd pull everything off the Joey Bed, and it there was room, use it as a magic capret (creeper).  Lots easier than trying to get over that belly catcher at the entrance.  Just slide yourself and your tools in and out.  Think I could fit, and my waistline has, well lets not go there ::) !!

I solved the Joey Bed removal problem in a novel and creative way: I talked my wife into riding it into the bay and doing the charger/converter exchange.  :)

She removed the old and cranky OEM charger/converter while I kept a careful safety watch and was in charge of the pushing-into and the dragging-outta. I have to admit to a certain poor attitude at this job; I was caught red-handed throwing a tennis ball for the dog who lives next door and encouraging her 3-year-old blonde owner in doing the same thing.

After the charger-ectomy I then cobbled up connections and sent her boldly where no man (or, at least, not me) had gone before. And before you knew it.. or at least before *I* knew it... she had the Progressive Dynamics unit in place and, hey Presto! the batteries were charging nicely.

A job well done.

I must admit that the episode wore me out. Throwing that tennis ball is not easy!

We bought a take-out dinner of pork burritos and ate at home. We were both tired out after the exchange. I had to walk quite a bit to fetch tools and parts and walking is not one of the things I do well any more. Plus the trip to the hardware store to get a couple of parts. The job more-or-less unfolded as it went along what with discovering how the charger is connected to the batteries (lots of electrician's tape) and all.

The day eventually became quite nice with little wind and a lot of sunshine.
