fortuitous find fosters fast fix of flub from feisty ficus (sky light content)

... well, probably a salt cedar and not a ficus.

We were leaving a campground last week (no room at the Inn for us there,) and snagged our shower skylight with a low-hanging branch.  The road was ridiculously narrow.  It popped a hole in the bubble and threw the little smoke-colored pieces all over the ground and across the top of the coach.  Lots of concern arose.

No need for the concern!  The screws came out of the metal ring easily, the remains of the old bubble came off easily, and the silicone caulk on the inner plate scraped off easily.  What's better, the local Lowe's store had a replacement bubble!

The size was 22x22 which was slightly larger than the actual 24x24 dimension of the old one.  (Size reflects the bubble dimension, not the total dimension.  I scored lines along the mounting flange with my Dremel and a cutting disc, snapped the strips off with pliers, smoothed the edge with a box cutter.  Some new caulk, metal ring, reinstall the screws and we were done.  From pulling off the old pieces to finished probably took 1/2 hour.

I wonder what Camping World would have charged for the repair...  I think we paid about $40 with the caulk, and it was fun!

We had FOT replace our double dome, both parts were cracked and it leaked.  Parts were in stock and just a little more than my wholesale cost at my supplier.  Labor was $40.30, and some little more for sealant.  Took them less than 25 minutes from the beginning when they rolled the ladder platform to finish and putting away their tools.  I have replaced maybe 150 skylights in the last 10 years, always on sloped roofs.  Not sure I could have done this job as fast or well as FOT.

Always glad to hear about a fair deal from FT.  Unfortunately we were about half a nation away, and even fluffy little clouds looked threatening.
