display in dash to turn engine off

Hello all.  I am desperately seeking information in regards to my motorhome.  My husband passed away last year and it's been since then that I have thought about getting it out.  I did pull it out to flush out the water during the cold weather and at that time, I started it up and a message came across the dashboard that said to turn off engine.  And then, within a minute, it shut off itself.  Everthing seemed to be working fine but it just wouldn't keep running.  The generator worked, all the gauges looked good, oil was good.  Can't figure it out and I don't want to move it without knowing what is going on or at least an assumption.  Any suggestions?  1992 U300 (I believe)

Y,

I am so sorry to hear about your husband's passing.  Please accept our condolences.

The profile Rod built on the forum shows you to be in or near Houston, TX.  Is that correct?  We have some very talented members, like Brett and Rudy, in the Houston area who I'm sure will chime in shortly.

Michelle,  Thank you.  I hope to hear from Brett and Rudy soon!  I really like this forum.  Rod hipped me to it a while before he passed.  He said I could post anything I need to and I would get answers or the direction I need.  HE WAS RIGHT!

You are getting a shutdown message from your engine management control system. Since its a Detroit Diesel 6V92, that system is called DDEC (Detroit Diesel Electronic Controls). It could be something serious, or as simple as low coolant level, for example...

Someone with a 6V92 might have a list of the shutdown signals that would allow all the possible causes to be checked for you...

Just from a distance, my first guess is also the low coolant level, that is a for sure shut down with short time delay, no oil pressure is a quick shut down for example.
Good luck

Good advice.  I didn't think to check that.

Yes, coolant level would be the first thing I would check. If that is not the case, have someone open the dashboard top and flip the switch marked engine. It is against the bulkhead about 18 inches in front of the steering wheel. A small bulb will start blinking the code the computer has stored. If you post the code it is blinking, I can tell you what the problem is.

If you can't find the switch, please post and I will take a photo of the location as well as the translation for the codes.

John,

I sure hope so.  I understand that there are programs that scan for phone numbers and e-mail address.  The foil is to write the info to fool the scan.

Steve can better answer this question.

OK, attached a couple of photos for the U300 DDEC II fault codes as well as the Allison 746 transmission fault codes. If you are viewing on a small monitor, you may not be able to read the small print so I also made PDFs of both so they may be downloaded, printed and used.

The ignition key has to be on for the light to blink. Other than that, the procedure is toward the top of the page.

Good luck and very sorry for your loss. Please email with any questions you may have.

Rudy,

The words do help against programs collecting information... even better to separate 509 them up in places 555 inside the posting 2345 itself.

Also, Steve has cleverly crafted the forum so that unless you are registered and logged in you can only read a couple of lines of each posting.  Even so, it pays to be careful.
