Air Compressor doesn’t kick out after air dryer exhausts?

What would make the air compressor continue to run after the air dryer kicks it out at 110 psi? Yesterday while driving I kept hearing the air dyer popping off every minute or so and not seeing the air pressure dropping at all. I'm guessing the compressor is not kicking out. Is there a pressure switch to look at?
Any help would be great.

Thank you
Dave

Dave,
Could be the air governor has went bad. This is a simple change and not much $$$. How long has it been since you serviced the air dryer? Could be trash in the blowdown valve.

I just completely rebuilt the air dryer 1600 miles ago. August 5th of this year.

The air governor is also call the "D2".  Much has been written about the problems, and more.  They are about $30-40, depending on new or rebuilt.  Just ask any parts counter for a new D2.

As suggested by those in the 'know', I bought one at the FOT parts counter for $31 or so.

Well I installed a new D2 Governor today. Picked up two of them today from NAPA brand new 105-125 psi for $13.99 each.
Will be headed over to Daytona Beach for Biketober Fest on Tuesday  and will see how it all works. Runnning here it is working better than before.
thanks for all the advice.

I don't quite know which one of the mechanical plagues I will succumb to next but I often go out and check the coach for the latest malady.

Actually the D2 Govenor has not been too far from my mind (I know where it is) but havn't researched much (other than to admire drawings, specs, etc.). With the though in mind that maybe I ought to pick up one as well, I started looking around.  Well, there were 11 different offerings on the NAPA web site!! What is a fellow to do? :help:

However, I think I have found the answer on the Haldex website...

I suspect that the counterperson at NAPA would sell me the correct one but now I am a more informed consumer.

For whatever its worth they are adjustable. Some have a rubber cover but under the cover is a stud with a screw driver slot and a jam nut. Crack the jam nut and turn the screw in raises the pressure that it kicks in at. Usually when you install a new one there right in the ball park. 100 to 110 psi.

Well after installing the new D2 Governor it is still doing the same thing. Only now I have 125 lbs. of pressure.  It will kick out but then never drops and will kick out the air dryer again a minute or so later. Is it possible the new one is bad too or what else would cause it to not let the air pressure drop to the 105 lbs. before popping off again?

thanks,

Dave,

I think the air dryer sends the pressure signal back to the air governor to turn the compressor on and off.

Dave,
The Haldex web site has a list of reps to talk to.
When you rebuilt the dryer did you also rebuild the valve in the elbow, where the air in from the compressor goes into the dryer?
Thinking about it, when you bypass the dryer the compressor will still cycle on and off at the set pressures. So, you have the same problem with two governors, don't think that's it,
So can the dryer send a bad pressure signal back to the governor?
Haldex rep can answer that.
I don't know how the valve disabling mechanism in the compressor works.
Sure hope it's not the compressor.

Dave,

Here is a link to the elbow John is talking about :

This is what it looks like and can be rebuilt  with a couple of "O" rings &  seat if this is the style you have.

I sent an email to them to see if i can get any help. I don't think it is the compressor because it keeps great pressure but the D2 governor wont let it kick out very long. I hope they will get back to me because we need to head to Texas next week.

Thanks,

Thanks to all the info. I ended up taking the air dryer apart again and one of the plastic covers over the diaphragm valve had dry rotted and jammed inside the valve to keep the compressor off until the pressure dropped.

Good thing I had bought an extra one when I rebuilt it last summer. The only thing I can think of, it was that it was from an old kit sitting around on a shelve. Then after I installed it, it just rotted from age.
I bought it on eBay.

Oh well everything is fine now. We are headed to Texas on Tuesday. ^.^d
