Fuel Filters hard start

On our coach I thought I would up date the primary fuel filter so I changed it out a couple of weeks ago and went to the beach for 3 days and everything was good but after we stopped for a while it took a bit of cranking to get it to start again. Next day it started right up. Today when we got home and it sat for 3 or so hours it was hart to start, so I moved it and fired it up again and it fired up with some black smoke. Is it sucking air at the new filter?  Thanks' Art  Here are some picts of the new and old filters.b

Art,

Yes, air in the fuel system could cause those symptoms.  If this is the first time you have experienced these symptoms AND it coincides with the installation of the new filter, that would be a"likely suspect".

Assume the Racor is the new filter??  Did you lube with oil or diesel the center and outer O rings and torque as shown on the filter element?  Are connections to fuel line torqued properly?  Tape or sealant on threads of filter housing?

I have never understood why one would change from the Winn fuel/water seperator setup, when it is such a good system, yes you need to replace the plactic  filter bowl due to the "O" Rings deteriating, but that is a normal and simple fix.  Guess the issue is lack of understanding how it works.  I keep mine in good shape and have not had any issues.
I love the part of installing all new fuel filters and press the air purge button, how simple, easy can it get, besides if you have a bad gasket/leak, it is easy to see.

It's getting hard to find filters for the Daul-Baldwin and it was a pain changing filters it was mounted over my starter batteries, so the new Raycor should have been a easy solution and the problem did start with the filter change.  Art

My main fuel line in my 97 is hard and cracked and required priming from the winn to start.

Replacing the line in my case.

Art,

I noticed you stated your old filter was over the starting batteries...mine is located there as well.  I HATE changing that filter.  To where did you locate the filter?

I replaced the Winn fuel/water seperator and purge pump with a Racor unit because the purge pump was seized and I could not find a replacement for the clear "can shaped" see-through filter housing. The top and bottom of this filter housing had "O" rings which sealed on plastic necks. These necks were reduced in diameter by the constant pressure of the sealing "O" rings. The "O" rings were good but air was being sucked into the fuel. I installed the new Racor in the same location, over the start batteries. I installed a "water in fuel" light on the dash using existing extra wires left over when the Audit 863 tank strips were replaced with the see-level strips.

Wyatt,
Does the newer Racor have a pump or is it just a standard fuel filter ?  When I was at FOT this past May, I saw a Winn system laying on ground in shop, wanted to grab it, but could not find anyone that knew about it.  Agree on the little O rings on the plastic jug on the Winn pump, I keep a spare, they are about $30.00 if my memory works.
I am for cheap as long as it works great.
Thanks

My Racor water/fuel seperator does have a purge pump, however, the control of it is different than with the Winn. Pushing a spring loaded button on the control box causes the pump to run. I located the control box beside the water/fuel seperator over the start batteries. This Racor water/fuel seperator does not have the see-through plastic container with the stainless screen that the Winn has.

The Winn unit had a wiring harness leading to the control panel which was at the back of the engine. The purge pump was controlled by a timer. Pushing the air purge button caused the pump to run for 30 seconds. Instructions indicated to press the scrader valve with the purge pump running, however, the shrader valve was on the filter unit above the start batteries. I noticed in newer Foretravels that the Winn filter pump assembly was moved to the rear of the engine beside the control panel. The Winn had a second button on the control panel to purge water automatically, while the Racor has a finger valve on a see through water bowl.

Wyatt,
Thanks for the description of the new filter setup with the pump.  My 2001 has the Winn located at the rear, right side, like in the pictures.  For me, I love to install dry filters, push button and in about a minute or less, the pump stops, you are all primed and touch start button, it starts and runs great.
I guess I will stick with the old Winn setup until they no longer support it with parts, but so far, so good.  Central Diesel in Richmond Va, where we have alot of injection work done on the older diesels, mostly the Roosa Master Pumps.  They are the distributor for many truck components and one of our regular suppliers.

Am I the only one that put a cheap electric fuel pump in-line to fill the Racor? 18 bux I think. And I can crack the line into the high pressure pump to bleed both filters at the same time if necessary.
