Front license plate mounting (was Re: What did you do to your coach today)

                                 The state of Maine requires a front license plate. I have been debating how to attach it, stick it in windshield, drill 2 holes in gelcoat or make a mount that would come up from underneath  the genset cover.
                    I got as far as having the drill in my hand and holes marked out and couldn't do it. Ended up Velcroing it on and gluing on a couple of fake bolt-heads. Looks good and no holes in front end.

                    BTW when we left the RGV in March and were headed for Nac in our old coach we were stopped at the border patrol check station and were asked to pull over to the side. When I asked what was wrong they said the computor flagged our plates as stolen. :o We were questioned at length by 2 patrol agents while they ran our Vin #'s on the coach AND tow car. After about 30 minutes they finally determined that our Maine tag numbers matched some stolen Texas motorhome tags and told us to have a nice day. Took a few miles for the butterflies to leave our tummys.

Front Licence plate mount.
I removed the OEM bracket which left holes that are now covered by the Licence plate.
I drilled four small holes and tapped with #10 course and installed #10 SS bolts with tapered heads and washers.

I have not wanted to put any holes in the coach for the plate so made a nice backing plate  of matching grain and colour wood as cabinets and fastened the plate to it then mount this against windscreen with 2 small suction cupa. Have not had any problem coming thru border with this and they are the ones who complain most.

                    John I seriously considered doing something similer but with the dash area covered with gps, laptop for VMSpc, XM antenna, sunglasses etc. I decided against putting any more stuff there.

            I think the Velcro will work well and keeps us legal.

That is the way I display my license plate since 2003. I got stopped once in Utah from a Highway Patrol who was desperate to write any ticket. I told him it was legal in Calif to show it this way and he mumbled off. 8)

 License plates shall at all times be securely fastened to the vehicle for which they are issued so as to prevent the plates from swinging, shall be mounted in a position so as to be clearly visible, and so that the characters are upright and display from left to right, and shall be maintained in a condition so as to be clearly legible. The rear license plate shall be mounted not less than 12 inches nor more than 60 inches from the ground, and the front license plate shall be mounted not more than 60 inches from the ground.

Front license plate, my Virginia front tag is in the kitchen drawer, never installed it, also do not have a state inspection sticker in front window, so no one seems to know or care that I am a Virginia vehicle. Coach stayes in garage or it is on the interstate.
Until I have an issue, I plan on not changing.  Have not seen a proper looking front tag mount yet.

Well, you just have not driven in the right parts of the state.  Vienna and Winchester have the cops sitting by a cut thru road looking over inspection stickers every month at the beginning of the month.
