Relays

I have a 1991 U300 and I just discovered a 120 volt AC relay installed a metal box behind the front television set... is this the automatic transfer switch for the genset?... or what is it?

...also a few days ago I discovered a large 12 volt DC relay behind the panel near the batteries which appears to have the two coach batteries on one side and the cranking battery on the other side... is this the boost solenoid that has its rocker switch on the instrument panel by the driver's seat?

...I don't need to work on any of this stuff at the moment but it would be nice to know what it is if I ever do have a problem.

a guess of mine is that is the auto switch off for the tv so when ignition is on the power to tv is off. Fed law so no tv while driving

Scott,

If the "relay" you found looks like the one attached, then yes, it is the boost solenoid, found behind a white fiberglass panel in the battery bay.

I just replaced mine today with a cole hersee 24213 as recommended by Pierce on a prior post. Just tested it and it works great. Cole Hersee 24124 replacement Make sure you add a ground to the chassis from the second small terminal as recommended by Gary B, or it won't work (Important!).  Make sure to disconnect the batteries when removing the old one and installing the new one, otherwise you may get a nasty burn from sparks if you touch the wrong thing with a wrench because its very cramped in there! After reconnecting the batteries press the boost switch you should here it click. Then test the house and chassis batteries for similar voltages.

The overhead 120 volt relay is to disconnect the front tv when the ignition switch is turned on to keep you from watching tv while driving down the road.

Thanks for your help my friends. I never would have thought of the front relay being used to turn off the TV while driving. I removed the TV because I don't watch TV at all. It's a good location for my printer with electricity already there and plenty of room for air circulation so the printer won't overheat and it's protected by the wooden cabinet so it won't get damaged.
