Door Latch Problem

Closed the door, when tried to open the handle had zero restriction-not opening.
Upon removing the door inner cover, I see the little lever that the outside handle is attached to is out of its socket and swinging freely.
After some experimenting, found the lever needed to be back under the bottom rotating part of latching device.  Looking closely I see the little lever is bent down slightly, guessing this will allow it to come out of the socket it should be in.
Question: I plan on adjusting it back up (Bent it) to what looks like a good place. so anyone have any sperience with this latching device ?
By the way, the DW walked thru drivers window, she is very thin, runs 5 miles a day.
Thanks
Dave M

That happened on my Born Free once. I had to bend it back a bit to make sure it worked each time.
