Sounds like a corroded connector/switch. The switch on the steering column would be high on the suspects list. Wiring that goes into the column is another possibility. Without taking everything apart on the road or going underneath, some Radio Shack contact spray into the switch might help. Pulling connectors apart, inspecting and spraying won't hurt. Intermittent stuff can be hard to trace.
