Trash compactor removed

Having never used the built in trash compactor I finally pulled it out. It looks like the previous owners used it a little but useless 150 pound anchor for us.

For Unihome owners reference if you want to remove it, on mine there were 4 wood screws in the front side flanges and two 5/16 bolts in the rear that are accessible from below. In my 40 footer, in the center main bay, one bolt can be seen and the other is under the metal cover. I unscrewed the cover about 3/4 ths of the way towards the front and was able to reach in and undo the bolt. The bolt is about 3" long.

We use our compactor all the time; we can empty the other waste baskets into the compactor 4-5 times before having to empty it once. Except for some food wastes, the compactor allows us to visit an RV park's dumpster about once a week. Never had one in the S&B home, but love it in the coach.

I LOVED my compactor in the '95 coach that we had.  I can't ever imagine wanting to get rid of one!!  No smell, easy as pie and extra storage under the sink, instead of a grody trash can that has to be emptied every other day.  I would love to have another one!

My '94 U225 SBI (side bath, island bed) had one, but I don't think the SBID  (side bath, island bed, dinette) had one cause that is where the dinette would go.  And I really would prefer the dinette over the trash compactor.  Think mine might eventually come out.

I think in a lot of the earlier models it was the ice maker or the compactor. Love my trash compactor except we use it so much the rollers are wearing out! One more item on the project list...

I have both.

What kind of bags do you use that don't leak?

Pat C Asked: "What kind of bags do you use that don't leak?"

Nothing fancy; we use Kroger's trash compactor bags. They are heavy-duty and have never leaked during our using them.

@Pat Same as Don. Just use the heavy duty plastic compactor bags from the grocery store. Plus try not to put anything leaky or potentially smelly in it. Put that stuff in a grocery bag and make a special trip to the dumpster. Glass gets recycled...

All,
With the trash compactor gone I had to make a door to cover the hole. Maybe later will add some drawers in there.

We have a no-dinette U225 with both a trash compactor and the U-line ice maker and like both of them (although we don't use the ice maker very often except when camping in very hot weather). The trash compactor is a good size for our life style. We generally compact once then take it out when it's full. If we compact too often it's hard to get out (heavy). Never had one in a SnB but our daughter and SiL have and they loved theirs.
