Hey DaveM - tell me about your HP upgrade (split from Re: TST Systems 507 series)

Dave M,

A bit off topic...

What mods to your your ISM?  I have an 01, U320, 36', #5879.  More HP? Resonator?  What do they do for you?

Thanks

Howdy,
From my seat, the change from the 450 to the 500 HP is not as big as the incrfease as the change from the 1450 Torque to the 1550 rating, that is huge, between the 50 hp and the 100 ft lob additional, the net is very noticable. Fuel mileage is what it is, I am certain that if I drove exactly the same as before the change, the mpg would go some, but with the more power, it is so wonderful to use the throttle as before, and pass where it would not before, so the mpg does not show much difference either way, but am driving a little quicker.
I do have all the Cummins Part Numbers and the ECM Program number, you have to know that it took Cummins Atlantic 3 days to come up with the total needed items and program to make this work and keep it Cummins Happy.  All with standard parts, this is NOT a hot rodded engine like the Banks etc are.
Another biggie was the change to the 5" Walker resonator from the factory Cowl design, actually a muffler change was needed as the new larger turbo would mount OK to the manifold but would was not matchable to the existing muffler setup, since I was going to do the resonator change anyway, I did it quick so the upgrade could continue.
Do not expect to walk into a Cummins shop and ask them to dig up all the needed info for this change. I feel the only reason they did not tell me to go fly a kite was due to spending over half million every year for years, or they know me and wanted to humor me, either way I dont care, but they did it.  3 days of digging trying to match up engine numbers and the CPL number, then covert to a non EGR engine as all ISM500 are EGR models etc, etc...
Hope this helps
Dave M

I've always been amazed how easy it is to make BIG power out of a inline 6 Cummins...

Agreed, one point Ihave notmentioned, the ISM is the smallest Cummins that is considered Heavy Duty by Cummins, unlike the A,B, C, ISL etc are Med Duty.
Think cost was $3,300.00 for the upgrade to 500 hp.

Well for anyone wanting more HP out of a ''Med Duty'' Cummings mechanical B or C series its cheap and easy but I have to warn you the Allison will not like the extra HP..
You can take the top cover off the P-pump (High psi pump) slide the cam plate and it's going to add 80 to 100 hp just like in the old 12 valve dodge cummins trucks... U can google cummins p pump slide cam plate and tons of stuff will come up or you can go to the TST web site for info.
I did this on my 1997 dodge truck and my FT.. The extra power was nice at first but I noticed the trans shift points changed and shifting felt like something was fixing to break so I slid the cam plate Half way back and all was well.. I also opened the exhaust and noticed a hp increase as well with lower egt by 200* @ full pedal
