Engine Oil

I have been following a thread on my Trawler list about engine oil.
The following report was referenced:

While somewhat long it actually talks about the differences in formulations of the oil additives in a set of specific lubrication oils.
Look particularily at the difference between Chervon DELO 400 and Chervon DELO 400 LE (table toward the back).

(some of you still have time for reading longish articles)
It was in the 80s in Austin yesterday. ;D

Long? A good writer could reduce this to less than a page and make it more readable. Interesting nevertheless.

Extending the drain intervals may be OK with oil analysis but it does not take into account many owners that go out to the garage and let the car idle in the morning until it warms up or make a cold start and drive a couple of blocks to work. All this without any oil analysis. How many car owners never change the oil?

Europeans drive an average of 12K miles compared to our 15K so the article is quite correct. They do open the hood for maintenance a lot more than we do.

Don't see a column for ash content.

Looks as if the Delo 400 and Pennzoil Long Life are among the best according to the chart and easy to find at retailers like AutoZone, O'Reilly's, etc.

These are all multi-grade oils and are NOT suitable for a Detroit Diesel 2-cycle. Only low ash straight grade oils can be used without compromising engine life.
