Lubro moly diesel purge
OK, so I was all set to post a nice scientific before and after MPG test with this magic juice my mechanic friend absolutely swears by. But Moby the White Whale had other plans, throwing too many variables at us. I was just going to do this injector cleaning exercise to it and see if I could see any improvement, and if so how much, but my mechanic said that we better take care of the driverside exhaust manifold gasket as well. Since it was only showing a max of 9PSI on the boost guage I didn't figure that the "before cleaning" fuel use would be fair and valid. My pal also found a fanbelt idler pulley that was about to fall right off the engine, so we rebuilt it and its twin and got parts for the fan pulley just in case, but I digress.
Yesterday we testdrove and found the full 14 PSI on the boost guage, so that gasket fix worked. Then we unplugged fuel lines and ran the motor on this diesel purge, straight up, for around an hour and a half or so. Prolly sent a couple gallons of the stuff through the engine. Within a few minutes, it was glaringly obvious the engine was running quieter. The vibration in neutral that had been shaking the wing mirrors a bit simply disappeared. The tailpipe smoke went away completely. We ran it at various RPM and throttle response just kept getting better and better. Seems like this stuff was indeed helping, getting rid of yukky buildup. Well this is all fine and good but what about fuel use? So when we were all wrapped up, I topped it off, drove 100 miles home, then out this morning on errands including running it through emissions test so I could transfer the title, then back to the local gas station, where I noted miles, 153, and topped it off again. Well, I was only able to stuff 10.4 gallons back into that tank.
I don't know what to make of this, I am most skeptical. I'm sure that running the tank down closer to empty would be a more accurate measurement, but heck 150 miles isn't all that short a sample. I tried to see to it that the rig was level both times, and I eyeball checked down the filler neck to see that the level was about the same. Maybe I only thought the rig was level and it wasn't for one of those fillups? Because almost 15MPG out of a 3208T pushing 24 grand seems... unlikely. I was very nice to it, keeping it below 65 on the highways and not flooring it any more than absolutely nesessary, trying to drive smooth and efficient and all, and had been hoping fondly to see 10 at best. 14.7.. you gotta be kidding me. So has anyone else used this magic juice? Has anyone else even come close to this sort of mpg out of their 36 footer even when it was brand new? Or was Moby just listing to port on the 2nd fillup and I could have put another 10 gallons in if it really had been level? All I know for sure is the old mill run smoother and quieter than it did, and is more willing to pull from 50 to 60. I will most certainly check fuel use very carefully next time we go for a drive. Let me be clear, I'm not trying to shill for lubro moly, I'm more interested in where I might have gone wrong on this reading. I don't think this mileage would be possible with a brand new 3208. I am new to this level of RV...
