Audit Monitor -- Camera issue

I've never had the Monitor working since acquiring the Coach 6 months ago, and it didn't make sense that the CRT would have failed, considering the low-time on it (approx. 7K miles). So I removed the Heat & A/C control panel to gain access to the switches and connections to the unit. As it turned out the "monitor" rocker switch only had one wire connected, and I found another near-by with the right size spade, and re-connected it.

Yep! -- then the monitor came on and I was able to see the tank levels ( 25% full on the black tank, which might be another issue now, as I have no way of knowing how long it has been in that state).

The compass function also worked, but the rear camera position only shows a grainy, kinda dark blue/grey image. I thought it was worth climbing on a ladder to clean the lens cover just in case it was just gunked up, but no luck.

Back up in the monitor area there are some other wires that are terminated with smaller female spade connectors -- but not plugged into anything, I'm reasoning that the factory would not have bothered to do this with unused wires -- so maybe whoever was poking around in there -- also disconnected a camera wire.

Can anyone tell me what colors the o.e.m. camera wires were in 1994-95?

OK, you should have 3 wires, the coax, a red wire # 71 and a ground wire.

My experience has been that Javelina does not help much. As I recall they are in Frisco, TX. We have found that installing a new camera is probably the best way to go if the old one is bad. There should be a coax type cable attached to the back of the old CRT. The other end is up in the cabinet above the center of the bed. Just remove a couple of screws inside the cabinet on the back wall and you will see the camera guts. If you have loose wires, the camera may not be getting any electricity from the dash switch. Check the wires coming into the back of the camera switch and see if they are getting any juice. As I recall they are black and red and about 14 ga.

If the camera is getting electricity from the switch and it is hooked up to the CRT then its time to replace the camera. Replacements are very inexpensive and there are a number of posts on the forum in that regard. Since you can read the tank levels it appears that the CRT is working. A new camera should hook up to the old CRT with an adapter or two. If you want color, you can get a camera/screen package for as little as $100 from eBay or  a much more sophisticated system elsewhere on line. Check the archives for lots of ideas and details. Just don't pay Javelina $700 for old technology.

For less money than to get the old one working, contact RVCams Backup Cameras and Rear View Systems

They are familiar with upgrading Foretravels with more up to date cameras and monitors. And they will still display the tank audit information.

Here is the link to my old post. Still working great today. You can get the adapters at Radio Shack and be up and running in a few minutes except for the camera mounting. Depending on how OEM you want it to look and the size of the camera, mounting it will take a lot longer than the electrical side. Cameras are first rate and even cheaper than when I did mine.

Michael, Does your setup have a brightness knob on the dash? Maybe the monitor is turned down too much. I hope that wasn't a stupid question on my part.

Thanks for all the tips. Maz-- yes, the rheostat knob for brightness control works fine. It's either a dis-connected wire on the camera circuit, or the camera head itself is just dead.

I gave a quick peek inside my above the bed, inside the cabinets -- looking for an access cover to the camera, but did not see anything other than finished, smooth wood paneling.

In the center of the cabinets over the bed should be a square/rectangular panel-- most are held in with two #2 square head screws.

The camera is behind it.

Check for 12 VDC and check the coaxial connection.

I have a similar problem, and I've been reviewing the various posts and trying to figure out what to do. It finally dawned on me that since all of the video connections are via BNC connectors, if I get a television set with a BNC connector on it I can see whether the camera is putting anything out, and also whether the Audit is putting anything out. I think I've got such a set at school somewhere, so tomorrow I'll see what I can find. At least I'll know what, if anything, is working.

I'm kind of liking the idea of replacing the whole system, though, but first I want to know what works and what doesn't.

I did the exact same replacement and it works very well. The best info I gleaned from this repalcement was that just about any video device will work for this. In other words, your TV will work. You just have to unplug the BNC connector at the control box, I believe it is the lower one but you can follow it from the monitor to determine which one it is. Use whatever adaptor you need to get from your TV (or whatever video device) onto the BNC of the control box and plug it in. If you don't want to modify your dash you can split your signal to a second monitor on the dash. Puts you view in a much safer line of sight...

Make sure it's a reversible monitor. Signal splitters are available in either RCA or BNC, very inexpensive on line...

Thanks, Brett. Actually, I have all the BNC stuff (tv, cable with BNC on both ends, etc.). Just have to go out and do, but I'm going to wait a couple of days until it warms up again. 70 yesterday, 40 today, back to 70 by Thursday. Sure with the temperature would decide whether we're having winter, spring, summer, or fall.
