Freedom 25 Is Not Charging

This morning we fired up the generator. All looked good until I noticed that the battery voltage on the Link 2000 interface was not rising. The charger is turned on, the indicator light shows the charger in "Charge" mode, but current is still negative rather than positive.

I fear a failure in the charging system of the Freedom 25. If you have experience or knowledge, please suggest possible solutions including a replacement unit. Is there a possible reset, fuse, or relay failure that can be repaired?

If I install a Magnum, do I replace the Link 2000 panel with a Magnum control panel? Do I change out the shunt system as well?

Take your fist or the palm of your hand and hit the face of the unit about as hard as you can. Yes I'm serious! It resets the contacts in two circuit boards and sometimes it will start charging again. Gary O

Worked for me when I had one if these. Sometimes took a couple "percussive adjustments"

OK, I will bite, what is the best/recommended replacement for my 2500 Xantracs in the 2001 coach. ?? No issues yet, but nothing lasts for ever.

For me replacing an inverter/charger was an easy decision.

I replaced my still working 2500 inverter/charger with two units, a Zantrex "pure sign" inverter (with 3% THD) and an Iota 55 amp, dual voltage converter (13.4v or 14v). I live on solar power and do not need the rapid charge available with a charger (14.6v). I would sell the 2500 inverter/charger (OE in 1996 U320) if someone would like a spare. What I did will not work for those of you who use your generator and charger to do a rapid recharge of your house batteries (converter voltage is too low for rapid recharge).

Freedom 25 is working fine now. It appears that the simple threat of percussive maintenance was sufficient to fix it.

Or it could have been the bumpy roads we travelled getting to the Mid-South Rally in Waco. Tested the converter (a.k.a. charger) on shore power and on generator power. I'll probably continue using modified sine wave inverter power until I am forced to change.

Thanks to all for suggestions and experience. I'll try to remember what you have shared. (I think I may have forgotten this before, but I can't remember.

Well... it's a moot point now but I am with Wyatt regarding two units instead of just one. Actually, we have moved in the direction of multiple units. As power requirements for electronic gadgets become smaller, we've found that we an just get more inverters and use them for specific needs.

The 180-watt pure-sine inverter in the bedroom plugs into the cigarette lighter plug for the old DC tv and can easily power both the BluRay player and the 23" LED HDTV plus it can also power my electric razor. I can also plug my LED bedside lamp (which aims at my book to avoid depriving the DW of her sleep) into it.

Another inverter up in the dash can run the TV and BluRay there along with wall chargers for cell phones, tablets and laptops.

The 1600-watt pure-sine inverter under the fridge can run a residential fridge or the microwave. However using the microwave as an oven is probably a job for the generator. It needs to be run now and then, anyway.

You didn't have a Xantrex Prosine repaired, you had a Xantrex Freedom 25 repaired. Completely different things.

You didn't have a Xantrex Prosine repaired, you had a Xantrex Freedom 25 repaired. Completely different things.

Tom, there is a difference between them and if yours is the "yellow" Prosine it is not repairable and I called the Xantrex office here in BC a while back and they told me too. Gary Omel had a bunch of them to try and fix and if I am correct they are all in the recycling bins now (gary, please correct me if I am wrong).
Some of the other models can be worked on.

Wa_desert_Rat has more than one inverter, however, I have only one 1800 watt inverter under the foot of the bed. The 120VAC power from the inverter is distributed throughout the coach via the 120 AC wiring and power panel, which is also under the foot of the bed. I do not recommend many inverters connected via the cigarette lighter sockets because the 12 volt wiring will probably be undersized for this task. Certainly, the current carrying ability of the socket itself is limited. The 12 volt connections to my inverter use pinch bolts to keep lots of pressure on these high current connections.

John, I managed to save five out of twenty but one of the the five is still not right.I can make it work only with a temp probe plugged in. I did save a few circuit boards but the rest went for salvage. If anyone has a take out that has NO smoke damage, It might be repairable.

We had the Freedom 25 inverter replaced in our 99 U320 a year or so ago with a prosine model... and I'd be happy to part with it for $150 plus shipping (it's very heavy)... it's on consignment at an RV repair shop right now... was working just fine when we had it replaced...

If it truly is still working properly I would be interested, though I'm a little confused. I don't think the yellow Xantrex Prosine 2500 inverter was never called a Freedom 25 inverter. I thought the black Freedom 25 was made by Heart even though Xantrex and Heart merged a few years back.

Is your inverter a yellow flat inverter or a black square inverter?

I had a typo in my post yesterday... and just modified it.... The one we took out was the Freedom 25 (square black) and replaced it with a flat yellow Prosine... I think it was a 2.0... and yes, there should be no reason the Freedom 25 would not be working... it was doing just fine when we had it replaced... The only reason we replaced it was we wanted one that produced a true sine wave..
