Alternator

Wanted to share. A Foretravel friend sent me his alternator to be rebuilt for $75 by my contact in La Porte, Tx.  We inquired if the alternator could be upgraded to 200 amp.  So for only $135 total he got new bearings, brushes, 200 amp stator and all checked out good as new.

If someone else wishes to have his alternator rebuild and/or up graded, send me a message and I will be glad to help.

HI Dave,

The alternator was a Leece Neville, but he can rebuild any brand.

Tell him to make sure they did not install a jumper to the sense connection. That *has* to go to the start battery. For some reason, rebuilders almost always send the alternator back with that jumper.

Craig,

This fella has been rebuilding for many years and has no problem rebuilding them just the way they came in.

In fact he is changing the regulator on a brand new Leece Neville that is brand sold for a RV with a isolator.  The reason for the regulator change out is the new one has two yellow wires that will not work with the Foretravel set up and the replacement regulator will.

You are correct in you gotta know your stuff.

Rudy,

We have the same kind of shop here in town. A couple of guys that have been doing quality work for many years. Much better than having minimum wage guys throwing a bunch of used parts and cheap bearings into a alternator with a fancy box they call remanufactured. I have seen several members of the local EAA (flying club) in here for their aircraft starter and alternator work. They have done great work for us including rebuilding a tired starter for our 4107. Just over $100 with a new solenoid in California at that.

Pierce, It is the normal when you get the recommendation from the local FBO shop for such things, same here in our area, I take all our starters and alternators (12V, 24V & 32V) to just such a shop, never have any issues, they just work great, not a repaint repair, infact no paint at all, they look new & with safety wire for the flybirds.
Love working with guys who know their trade, and stay clear of the wannabee clueless  experts.
Cheers

Has anyone tried a Delco 40si? There is a 275 amp new one on ebay for $600 -  normally they are about twice this.
