Alternator fan belts 6v92

I'm going to be changing out my alternator belts are the correct belts Gates 7290 XL? That's what's on there now. Just want to be sure they are correct. Any of my 6v92 brothers out there know for sure?

Ken,

I have a set in the bottom of a box and will look tomorrow. I do remember using Gates Green Stripes on everything the day after we bought ours and your Gates number sounds good. The belt tensioner adjustment should be about midway when the belt is properly adjusted. I looked at ours tonight but no numbers I can see on the belt itself. Back to you in the morning.

After 25K, I can just turn them 90 degrees with my fingers but can't remember if I have had to tighten them between now and them.

I did find cracks in the Gates AC belt that was new at the same time. Strange.

Might take a look at your 10Kw generator belt too. Not so easy to change.

Ken,
That's the exact same number I have.  Just to make sure the location is the same, my alternator is on the transmission side of engine, up high, on driver's side (2 belts).
I just changed all of my belts and saved the old ones in the sleeves from the new belts and marked on the sleeve the application, date and "this is old belt" so I wouldn't think it was a new belt later on (even though the side cracks make it obvious) .  I carry the old ones in the coach all the time as backups.  I purchased the new ones from Amazon believe it or not.

Thanks John! That's exactly where my alternator is. Guess I'm off to O'Reilly's this morning.

Ken,

My owner's manual shows:

(2) Gates 5148276 for the alternator

(2) Gates 9440 for the a/c compressor

(1) Gates K060445 for the hydraulic pump

My a/c compressor currently has (2) Dayco gold label diesel grade 17448  13A1135 belts on it.

I changed the hydraulic fan belt to a Gates K080450HD thanks to Pierce's recommendation.  I also added a washer to align the tensioner properly.

I haven't checked the alternator to see what belts are actually on there.  Thanks for the heads up.

Ken,

Alternator belt is Gates XL 7290, Napa XL 25-7290, Dayco 15290  (2 required)

Alternator part number: Leece Neville, 160 amp, A0012824JB (note: this is a different alternator with the Foretravel battery isolator than the truck model)

AC belt: Gates 9440 otherwise known as a 13A1120 (2 required)

Hydraulic Pump belt: Gates K080450HD 8 rib belt. (use 6 rib belt at your risk) Spend time to align pump and tensioner!

Power Tech 10K (PTS MH-10) belt 15531-72530  (Kubota part number) Any belt 10mm x 885mm will work fine.

Note: I have the complete Power Tech manual with schematics. Email if needed.

Here is the Detroit Diesel engine ID sticker. Located on the driver's side valve cover. You WILL need the info to get parts and replace any injectors. Use a smart phone with a light source plus patience to get a good photo. Photo should cover injectors for all 350hp 6V-92TA engines. Call Detroit using the label info for the exact injector number using the info on the bottom left side of the label.

Keywords: Detroit Diesel, 6V-92TA, alternator belt, generator belt, model number, part, Kubota, Power Tech, PTS MH-10, Air Conditioning, AC, Hydraulic pump, Gates, Dayco, NAPA

Stoopid question, but the side radiator 6V92TA has a belt driven hydraulic pump for the fans? Is there a separate hydraulic pump for the power steering that's direct drive off the supercharger? I have the rear radiator 6V92TA so please forgive my ignorance.

If you steer clear of the Dayco belts, you will be a much happier RV'r, stick with Gates / NAPA (NAPS belts are Gates), you will be happy.

John, please regale us with how you replaced the 3 fan belts. I have wanted to do that, but not quite sure how to do it. Did you get a matched set? (I have the rear radiator).

Sure.  No matched set needed for the belts, but of course, buy together and replace together.  All work is done from the top, under bed.  It gets a little tight in there and I used a headlamp (or a flashlight) to see.
The fan is on a sliding mount that has 4 bolts - use a 3/4" open box wrench to loosen bolts.
Next the mount has a vertical bolt that is used to adjust the tension, use a 3/4" socket with long extension(s) to loosen it completely.
Belts will come off one at a time.  You have to slide them over each fan blade to completely free them.  Note that the fan has moved down at this point and may contact the shroud on the bottom.
Installation is just the reverse.  Don't forget to go back later and tighten them up after a while (200+ miles).
I think this is the easiest belt set to change due to the bolt tensioner - makes it easy to dial in just the right tension that you want.
For all other readers:  the above applies to the rear radiator (pre 1992) 6V92 engines.

...and those of you with the rear radiator, get rid of that fiberglass radiator fan right now before it explodes and takes out your radiator in some little town where nobody will work on a diesel pusher and you have to replace the radiator yourself while stranded in a parking lot ...get a nylon fan on there right now, before you even start your engine again ...every single one of those fiberglass radiator fans explodes sooner or later and it will certainly happen to you if you wait too long
