What coolant (antifreeze) for my Power Tech 10 Isuzu Generator?

I had to pull the Radiator, which is also a shield for the belt on my Powertech generator.  I captured the coolant but I don't want to reuse it.  My current coolant is green.

So, what would be a correct coolant to fill the radiator and overflow tank when I re-install the radiator.

I'm near an O'Reilly, so my choices are:
1.  Antifreeze/Coolant Prestone - Engine Coolant/Antifreeze  50/50 Prediluted

2.  Antifreeze/Coolant Final Charge - Engine Coolant/Antifreeze  50/50 Prediluted (Extended Life), I think this is red.

3.  Antifreeze/Coolant Fleet Charge - Engine Coolant/Antifreeze  -  SCA Precharged, no idea what color this is.

At this point all I can really pull off is filling the radiator.  I can't really do a full flush due to being in a campground and having limited time.  Coolants for diesel engines seems like a very complex subject.

I just want to make sure what I top off with is correct for my Isuzu diesel engine.

****  You might want to check the brackets holding your Radiator on your generator.

Thanks,
Douglas

The ideal situation, from a convenience standpoint, is to use the same coolant in both diesel engines.  What are you using in your big engine?

Most coolants on the market will say on the container "compatible with all types of coolant" or something like that.  These days, I think mixing brands/types of coolant is usually not a problem.  You could just use whatever "universal" coolant is easily available to you at this time to get back on the road.  Then later, when able, do a flush and get the generator filled with the same brand/type as in the big engine.

I use Fleetguard ES Compleat OAT in both engines.  It is highly recommended on this Forum.  We carry a couple gallons of 50/50 premix in case we ever need to top off either radiator.

Douglas,

Good time to flush the whole generator cooling system and then go back with the same coolant as you are using or the one you decide to go with the next time engine coolant is changed.

@T-Man,

All due respect, that article is dated 2012.  Perhaps things are different now?  I'm no expert on this stuff, but every tech document I have read on the coolant I use (Fleetguard ES Compleat OAT) specifically states: "Compatible with all other antifreeze/coolants".

I doubt they would print that right on the front of the bottle if it was going to cause any known harm (read "lawsuits") to customer engines.

Thanks to a forum member, I realized what I was calling a "radiator" is not a radiator.      :headwall:  It's a tank with one small hose going into it, and it has an semi-translucent tank hanging on it.

I'm posting a lousy pic of what I removed.  Unforunately, I was in such a hurry to get in back in I didn't take any pics of it while it was out.

So, if I only drained this one tank, do I need to worry about air in the system?

Your pic sure looks like the radiator with a pressure cap on it to me Douglas.  If you drained it you will almost be certain to get air bubbles in your coolant, which will stop your generator for sure.

I think it would be best to drain all of the coolant out and replace with fresh coolant, then be sure to do a good burping of the system to get the air out of it.  The procedure was shown on a link above.      ^.^d

Douglas,

What your picture shows is your volume tank. The hoses go to your remote radiator.  If you look at the top radiator hose where it connects to the engine you will see a petcock.  I would make sure that you have antifreeze here as this is where your thermostat is located and it won't work correctly if it is air locked. It won't but a little extra time to make sure the air is out of the system.  Even with just taking this tank off I have had to purge the air out of the petcock that is on the top of the remote radiator on occasions. The way this system is set up it may take several heat cycles to get all the air out.
