N.W. Chicago area Truck/Foretravel repair recomendations

I may have to take my Foretravel in for brake work. I have had 2 shops do work on the Foretravel, 1 shop failed miserably at tire replacement, and the other fixed there mistakes. The shop that fixed the mistakes did a good job but are over 1 1/2 hours away. I would like to find a shop closer to me that does good reasonably priced work.

Any shop suggestions from the Chicago area Foretravel owners out there?

I've only had my engine/genset oil changed at Cummins Coach Care in Normal and had no complaint with that work.  However a word of caution, be very specific on what you want done. 

Case in point - on my last visit for an oil change I asked them to also look at a very small crankshaft leak.  When they were done with the oil change I asked about the leak and they said it was not much but would "I like a quote?"  Well, I thought I made that clear up front and I wanted to get the leak taken care of on that visit.  I was not going to pay for the work to fix the leak and replace the fresh 29 quarts of oil they just changed!  They said that the engine side of the shop fixed leaks and not Coach Care.  Just make sure that your intentions are well known and you are dealing with the shop folks that will be doing the brake work.

I have had work done here (alignment).  The owner had a class A so he understands them.  Very satified with them.  Might be a bit far for you but easy to get to?

My current shop is over a hour away.  They are one of the oldest coach conversion shops in the country, but no longer do conversions.  They just work on conversions now, along with other local motorhome repair jobs.  And their rates aren't bad. There are others closer that do lousy work, and I no longer go to them.  Much rather drive a bit futher and get it done right!!!  Especially when it comes to brakes!!!

I read your original testimonial about Marvins after you had his shop do your alignment.

Last year AFTER Baur Bilt screwed up the tire installation and broke off the wheel studs, I headed straight to Marvin to have the studs replaced. He did a good job and was VERY helpful ( took him several days and lots of driving to track down the replacement studs). I would gladly go back there, but would like to find a shop MUCH closer to home. Marvin is about 1 1/2hrs away, so is Cummins in Normal and Cummins in Milwaukee(south side of Milwaukee). I would like to find a shop closer by that I could develop a long term relationship with if I continue owning a RV. If I have a big mechanical problem I would like to be in  a reasonable towing range, or close enough that I could drive a crippled RV to. With bad brakes a 1 1/2 hr drive is too iffy and dangerous to me and others on the road.

I would NEVER go to Camping World! I learned my lesson years ago when I brought my previous RV to them to have a Banks Power Pack system installed on my 454 chev. powered RV. I was in Anaheim CA. and thought I would leave it at Camping World to have the system installed while the Family visited Disney Land. We stayed in a Motel for 3 nights.  I went to get the RV(it seemed to run fine),drove it back to the Motel to pick up the Family. I noticed it ran rough. I stuck my hand up into the front wheel well to trace the spark plug wires, I thought one had popped off. I instead grabbed a handful of silicone. Apparently when Camping World installed the new headers they broke off the spark plug ends on several wires. Instead of replacing the spark plug wires they tried to glue the wire to the spark plugs. Probably figured it would last long enough for me to clear town. I replaced all the plugs and wires at a campground. I complained to Camping World HQ. They sent me a $300 check for my troubles. Nice response, but I will NEVER go back to any Camping World for ANY work!

I have found i rather travel a bit to a good shop.  Much easier that way then having it done wrong.
