Bose AV. 3-2-1

My bose AV 3-2-1 DVD tray has jammed / broken , tech advised that  it's not worth repairing and to buy a seperate blue ray player which could be plugged into the bose system . I would like to stay with the original system and not too keen on yet another box / remote .
Any thoughts advice

Jimmy, I've seen them for sale on Amazon or eBay. We had one repaired by Bose but it was pricey.

Ours had a similar failure a couple of years ago and we replaced it with a eBay purchase.  Then last year we replaced the front TV with one which did not have S-Video (fewer and fewer do) so we couldn't use the DVD player anymore, anyway.  Talked to the Bose folks and they recommended a separate BluRay player, which is what we now have since it was the most affordable solution.  We have the 3-2-1 still in the setup for audio (and radio for the Posse when we're away from the coach).

Agree on buy separate Blue Ray. Bose expensive to repair (they always try to sell you new one) and wiring is proprietary and usually not the same between Bose systems, so :

    • Bose Expensive to Repair

    • Usually no Upgrade path within Bose line

    • Tear out of Bose is a require too with significant expense for new components.

    • Blue rays cheap and easy to attach.

    To manage your remote hassle, suggest a programmable "all in one" remote, $100 or less at Best Buy or similar. Relatively easy to program, and end the hassle of multiple steps to get the systems working right, and multiple remotes.

Looked on eBay and anything listed as working is $160+pp,  if it was factory reconditioned I would buy it , but an older used unit for $180 is a bit of a gamble

Yes - per the local Bose store last year, there is nothing in their lineup that is compatible with the Acoustimass module we have in our coaches.

Any recommendation on blue ray player , easy set up and use ( like the idea of one remote control )

Last Black Friday weekend, I picked up a simple Samsung Blu Ray player for $59. It boots up much faster than my 5 yr old Sony Blu Ray, plays the movies perfectly. It doesn't have all the bells and whistles, but we bought it and a 32" Apex LCD which we planned on using in the rig.

I haven't checked, but I'm sure that there are still good prices out there waiting to lighten you wallet with whatever you want to relieve it of. :-\

I just purchased a Sony Blue Ray player from Wal Mart think I paid $78. Plays Blue Rays and DVD's.

Blu-Ray players are inexpensive now. Read reviews on Amazon, etc. before buying as all are not created equal. Unless you have a 1080p 32 inch or bigger TV, you won't be able to tell the difference between a upscaling progressive DVD player/disc and a Blu-Ray player/disc.

Bose was OK but a laptop or Mac Mini into a 12V amp and good speakers are really light years ahead of a Bose. Great sound and you can do it all with 12V (unless you use a Mini).

Do double-check what connections you'll need and make sure the player has them.  We have a Sony (don't recall the model number) that has component out, which we needed; it's been discontinued and it's follow-on doesn't have that.

Think they are all using HDMI plugs now.

Yup, but older TVs and the Bose for audio won't have HDMI, hence the need to check for "legacy" connections or some form of adapter.

Isn't it "fun" how a simple project, like trying to regain DVD player capability, can grow unexpectedly ;)

I had a similar problem with my '98 era Bose and did not want to replace / re-wire for a different system. Plus the digital read-out on the tuner was getting so dim it was difficult to read in daylight. Found a guy who does repair exchange on the Bose systems, and thought he was priced fairly. The component outputs on Bluray players were mandated out on new models as an anti piracy feature.  It is possible to get an inexpensive HDMI to component module, Amazon has a number of them.  No experience with them.

I'd go along the lines of Pierce's advice.  It's pretty easy to improve on the Bose system.

Jimmy, I got a home system Panasonic with blu ray for $158 and discarded the speakers except for woofer.  Run everything thru it....CD, DVD, directv audio....to my Bose speakers.
Works good for us and surround sound too.

Not sure if option for you, just an idea.

First let me admit that I am a technophobe , hours pouring through manuals drive me crazy . I decided to buy a  new DVD player and thought I could just plug into back of bose system and all would be fine WRONG , the bose already has two inputs into the back ( sat tv, cable input ??)
 So now I am back to you guys for options before I pay someone to come look at it
Option 1 replace bose 
Option 2. Plug new player into tv , but then now DVD at rear tv
Option 3 pay someone to sort it
