Double asterisks on Allison pad

Twice during shifting of the trans I have had the trans non responsive and display an asterisk in each window.  Turned the motor off and then back on and it showed the correct info in the window and worked fine.

Any ideas?

Sounds like what I've heard termed "cat eyes".  Here's one solution from the board:

Hey Bob,

I'm certainly no expert but it's my understanding when the control pad can't communicate with the transmission it displays the double asterisks or "snake eyes" on the display. 

I've had this happen twice too, and I think it's due to a bad ground.  Both times this has happened to me either the speedo or tach or both has been acting up as well.

Hopefully someone with a lot more knowledge will give us more info.

Edit:  In the time it took me to type my reply Michelle posed.  Didn't mean to imply she didn't have a lot of knowledge.

Bob, Allisons are really sensitive about voltage.  If your have low battery voltage the pad and the transmission can do funny things. Check the voltage at your batteries while starting, how far is it dropping.  A load test of batteries may tell you that you have a cell going south and voltage is low.

Voltage and batteries are perfect and new.  I suppose I should trouble code them.  Hardly remember how...

With ignition on, engine off, push up and down arrows at the same time. On the newer generation transmission, that will bring up fluid level.  Push the up and down arrows at the same time again.  That will bring up the diagnostic codes.  It will be a two digit number followed by a two digit number.  It will be d-1 (for diagnostic code 1) XX--XX. If it comes up d-1 - -, there are no stored diagnostic codes.

If there is a d1 code, after recording it, push the mode button. That will scroll you to d-2.  Continue until you get a dX XX-XX. When you are through, just push "D" to exit.

Allison's website will give you a list of what the codes are.

But, if the shift pad has snake eyes, your Allison ECM may not be communicating with your shift pad so you can not do this. 

Let us know what you find.

Always a good idea to to unplug the 2 gang plugs at the transmission ECM and firmly reconnect.  Same for the connection at the base of the shift pad.
