stair slide air leak--no more!!

finally got around to fixing that cylinder seal leak and it is both a quick and permanent fix ( and very cheap to do)
I removed the regulater valve for this slide and put the 12v NC Brass valve between it and control valve so it would be operating on a lower pressure and did not interfere with the line going to vacuum system under step. Simple set up and I wired a seperate switch (with light indication when on) to the solenoid and it works fine. Now that I feel is my answer to the next to last of all my leakdown problems. The rear tank has only lost 5lbs in 4 days (I had to drain the other to do this valve fix)
My last job is to remove and replace seals in the treadle valve (very hard location to get too)
So, instead of spending money on cylinder relacement and the associated labour if you too have a big leak on the slide-the answer is this! Total cost around $40.  Valve off Ebay.

So glad to see it John, from my view, there are a few common sense areas for easy upgrades just like this one, maybe owning A MCI Bus was a great learning tool, lots of nifty solutions and economical too.
Enjoy

22 hours later after installing the new valve on slide my gauges show just under a 5lb loss in 22 hrs.
Wow, what a difference, and here is what I suggest to others with fast leakdown rates.
1-Remove the tank check valves and clean or replace, these to my knowledge (other than Pamela and Mike) have never been mentioned in past posts as being a source of air loss, I now know they are a big one. At the same time remove the one on supply line of Air Drier and look at that one too.
2-Slide cover(if you have one) and test for leaks at step side of cylinder. If it bubbles put in the valve I did--it works.
3-Remove the Air brake Manual valve on dash (as per Wyatt) and replace O ring seal.
4-Obviously check all lines you can get too for loose fitings etc.
5-This one needs the gen-set to be moved out a bit, and test fittings on Foot treadle valve. Mine were all leaking a bit and needed tightening up. Awkward to do if not able to get under coach.
6-For those of us with the air operated step, these cylinders too can cause leaks and can be serviced as Brad has shown.
I feel if each of these items is looked after your air will last longer too.
For anyone passing by ???? it is a simple issue (standing under the coach)to do all of these in 4 hrs!

When you said "1-Remove the tank check valves" were you refering to the "protection valves"?

The protection valves provide air pressure to non essential items like the step or the floor slide, only if the pressure in the tank is above 60psi. There are two, one on each tank and both of mine were leaking very noticeably. I carefully disassembled them in place (did not remove them) and discovered that the rubber seat was cracked. I borrowed a bicycle tube repair rubber patch from Wayne MacCauley and cut it to fit. Leak was fixed for just pennies. The new protection pressure was 70 psi, which I expected (the rubber seat was thicker), however over the last 8 months the protection pressure has dropped back to 60 psi. I confirmed the leak when under the front of the coach by feeling an air blast out of the hole in the center of the protection valve.

No not the Protection valves- mine has a diapraghm crack too and will be addressing that but no leak there. The check valves are at end of tanks with 1/2" line going too them. They look like a double hex big nut and come apart between hex's. These were allowing air to bleed back to wet tank then air dryer ( the air dryer one was installed backwards by FOT 3 tyrs ago so that did not help either. These valves have a seat and locate with spring help against a face as per "check" Below is picture of old one.
I bought 3 at under $11 each from International dealer here.

True, it is not uncommon for these check valves to wear and then leak a little, they run from $15.00 to $45.00 area.

John, do you have part numbers on these check valves so I could buy them online?

Wyatt, KN23000 (meritor#) Take one off first and see if cleaning it up will suffice. My seats had small marks on so that is why I replaced

I got the generic ones as they are the same as the Meritor one that came off. They are 1/2 npt in and out and are pretty much a standard check valve.
Amazon.com: KN2300

Go to a truck shop and see if you can get the ones I got  KN2300-G

Just a quick update on the air lost since doing these "fixes". Over the last 72 hrs my air has gone down 20lbs (I think mainly due to not yet getting that treadle valve out and seals replaced as I do know it is losing a small amount)
so, 20 divided by 72 gives 0.28 lbs/hr loss.
I call that pretty good and well worth the few dollars and time spent under coach.
Wyatt, re the Protection Valve, if you want to replace them (there are no kits for doing it), Meritor has a new # out for them R95590555396 and I see you can get them on 'net for between $20-$45 each
