Silverleaf TM550 WiFi JIB for iPad

Anyone running the new ipad app, "VMS-air" with the TM550 WiFi JIB?

The the only post I could find from an actual user was on the Silverleaf forum, Ipad and VMSPC | SilverLeaf Electronics, Inc. and it sounds like the iPad version does not have engine tables and other features that are found on the PC version.  This was from October 8, 2013.  And it looks like the app was updated on November 13, so wondering if there were any significant improvements (aside from the items noted in the iTunes store, VMS-air on the App Store on iTunes .)

What would the engine tables provide?  Is anyone using them on a regular basis?  Anyone know what "other features" are missing from the iPad version?

I also couldn't find any info on the TM550 WiFi JIB, and the cost for that.

Thanks Ken.  From what I can gather, the TM540 is Bluetooth and is only for Android.  The TM550 is WiFi and can be used for either Android or iPad.

Will either of those plug and play with a 2003 U295? I thought they only worked with a newer style connector.

I have selected this thread because it contains part of what what I want to know and I thought maybe what I want to ask and discuss could fit here ok......I have a 2000 vintage ISM

a.  Do they have an apple model now, since this thread began?  I read the web page, it seems about the only way for apple is with the wifi connection and that takes per the web a 2006 or newer engine.  Anyone know if that right, do you use an iPad?  I can call them and ask, but if you use the iPad, it ok?

b.  I think Dave M. uses a Toshiba.  I have been trying to find a small one, and I have the specs off of the web.  Anyone think a better pc now, maybe with touch screen?  Found a clearance Samsung for $248, small screen but fits the dash, seems an option but?

c.  Are there some notebooks or whatever, options to laptops, that work?  That you recommend?

In the thread I had about most common upgrades, what best bang for the buck, enjoyed, Dave listed the silver leaf.  Don and Tys have quit a set up, to dash and laptop. Then John S. talked to me about it the other night.  I think time for me to "move on up" and try this out.  Just trying to make the right choice of which pc/notebook/processor, then I can call Silverleaf to order and buy the "computer" from Walmart or such

Thanks for ideas,  Mike

I use a Toshiba Netbook for silverleaf and it works just right for me. Look on the modifications section of Beamalarm to see my set up.

I thought it was dependent more on whether you have a 6-pin or 9-pin connector from your engine.

From Silverleaf:

"If you have a J1939-equipped engine, you can now connect with Bluetooth or Wifi. You can recognize a J1939 engine by the fact that it will use the black 9-pin connector, and the engine is 2004 or newer. (A few older engines also use J1939. Call for more information.)"

My coach is a 2003, with the 9-pin connector (and it seems as though most of the reported connector types here are the 9-pin.)  And even though I really want to be able to use an iPad, the app is not nearly as good as the PC app. So I'm looking into the possibility of just using the iPad as an external monitor from an Intel Mac Mini, Android Tablet, or from a mini/tablet PC.

I wish I had made a separate thread for my question, I fear it lost under this thread title and appreciate the couple of replies I have gotten.  I really want one of these, Dave and Don and Mark and John have me convinced.

That said, I have a 2001 coach and the seven pin connection, not the nine pin.  I gather I cannot use the iPad with that.  Cannot wifi to iPad without a newer engine. Right?

A friend suggested a notebook as a PC.  I do not know if those work though?  Is it just a small laptop in functionality?  I think I need a small laptop (dash space is limited) and not notebook (iPad size fit the dash good)

I wish I could avoid the long cord to the PC but I guess not?  Gonna be a mess across the dash?

I need to call the silver leaf folks I guess, move on with what they say....and yet some folks on this forum are very creative, may get me a better result by their advice.

Thanks,  mike

Mike,

I can't help with the VMSpc hookup, but I have a HP Netbook that I love and am thinking that I would like to use it as a VMS monitor when we get our coach. It measures about 11" x 7", screen size is 5-1/2" x 7-3/4". I think it will be ideal for this purpose if I can figure out how to mount it on or above the dash.

This is what I have on my dash right in front of me:

VMS 240 CL | SilverLeaf Electronics, Inc.

It's great! No need to shift my gaze to read it. I watch it instead of dash instruments.

Highly recommended.

Hi Royce, so good to hear from you.  Hope you and Denise making progress.  I will try to find one of those monitor options.  Paul, you offered a great option I think, did not consider that method, device...I was fixated on the neat display that Dave M has, so "cool" to be able to arrange the screen but you may have a really good option for me...going to look at that.

I try to avoid increasing my post count, but felt I needed to reply to you two, you gave me a bit more things I had not considered....hope this helps other possible buyers.

The screens shown in the link to the VMS 240 CL are a bit misleading.

The screen on my VMS 240 CL shows all I want or need while driving and it shows much more than any of the screens on the website..

It's up to the user to display what they want on any of the screens.

Then there is always the option to have the VMS cycle thru many screen displays.

To me, the biggie on a VMS is I do not need to shift my focus from straight ahead.

Even a second or so with my attention diverted could be my last one.

Even with cell phones these days, it's now known that talking on one I am not holding is a bad as me holding one from the point of distractions.

As always, YMMV
