Checking Fuel Water Separator

Our coach has a Racor 490R series Primary Fuel Water Separator with a Racor R90P filter element. The Fuel Water Separator has a Solid bowl at the bottom of the filter rather than a clear bowl. I would like to know if anyone knows the procedure to drain a little fuel out of the filter to check for water. The filter does not have the Racor Fuel Filter Minder on the top of the filter. To drain, do I just turn the drain plug on the bottom of the filter. Is it necessary to open the vent plug on the top of the filter. And, after draining a small amount from the filter, is it necessary to prime the filter with the priming button on the top of the filter. The owners manual that came with the coach does not even mention this filter. Thanks. Larry

Yes you turn the screw at the bottom. I do not bother as I run the generator and the aquahot enough and can see those bowls and if they get water then I will clear out every one of them. But you turn the screw and it will drain out.  If you have a shrader valve on the top of the assembly you can push that and the prime button and if diesel comes out you are good too go.  It depends on how much you let out.  I would use a glass jar to catch it to see if it is water or fuel.
