1991 GV ORED Need New Dash A/C Compressor

Hi, I had it tested and charged up in Montreal, but that didn't last. At the time they suggested (I think, their English was even less then my French) that my compressor is probably shot, I didn't have time to fool around with it then, but do now.

Can some kind souls point me in the right direction of what to buy, or share your experiences dealing with this.

The fan seems anemic, was fairly string charged, but now makes a bunch of noise, but little air movement, and little heat.


Thoughts? Help?

There should be a brand name on the compressor which you should be able to cross to something that would work. What made them think the compressor was bad? I would have to charge and see what the guage readings were to determine if it truly is a bad compressor.

They had a full-on certified A/C diagnostics machine on wheels. It took a charge, but as soon as I powered the coach off, that was that. Shame as it was blowing super hard and cold. I just couldn't wrap me head around how to leave the coach running for a few weeks...

Sounds more like a bad leak that let the refrigerant leak out or maybe has a bad relay that tells the clutch to come on. If it was blowing cold and then after shutting off the engine it did not blow cold does not sound like a bad compressor. You need to check if there is 12 volts getting to the compressor clutch. I don't know which engine you have so don't know which compressor you have. If it is the 8.2 Detroit, would have an a6 gm compressor, and there are remanufactured available. There is a bosch type relay that puts the 12 volts to the clutch.

I have the 8.2 Detroit.

I, also, for the life of me, cannot seem to see how the dash controls activate the vent gates or whatever, to change air paths..?

I can see that the underside of one of the windshield air vents is split and not fully sealed, so that is fixable with some glue. Which partly explains why the Passenger side of the windshield was getting way less air. Switching between the settings seems to do nothing.

You didn't mention if your system was converted from R12 to R134?  I don't know if we share the same A/C system as I have a U300 - but it is the same year. 
Back in 03 I converted my dash AC to R134.  I did the work myself.  My parts receipt shows the compressor to be a Seltec TM-15 HD/HS ($325), and dryer to be "3/8 o-ring dryer" ($55).
I purchased these from a local Auto Air Conditioning, Muffler and Exhaust shop in the San Diego, CA area.  Today I think I would purchase online.
I also purchased a conversion kit (pressure switch and adaptor fittings) and book from ACkits.com and also read up on the subject on their forum.  Decided not to replace hoses as they are very pricy and very long and latest research (at the time) indicated that old R-12 hoses don't leak as much as earlier testing indicated.
The new compressor and dryer fit the existing fittings and mounts.  Still works today although I have to add a can of R134 each year and I stop charging it when the dash temperature inside the vent output reaches the lowest temperature - seems to drop and then plateaus at a certain point.

P.S. Just saw your latest post.  Vent damper controls are via a vacuum pump behind front bumper.  You should hear (with ignition on - engine off) the swish of vacuum as you select different button to direct air to floor, dash or windshield, and occasionally hear the vacuum pump run.  But your coach might be different.

Thanks John, mine appears stock. I will look for the vacuum pump, and see what else I can determine. I know that I am troubleshooting 2 problems at once. But what the heck!
